Your best bet is to get a Coffee Lake i7 8700K CPU. The K version is money well spent. As far a GPU a GTX 1060 will work just fine as the bare minimum but if you can afford a GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 Ti it will serve you well. 16 GB of RAM will work OK but 32 GB would be even better. Some of the systems come with a 256 GB SSD and a 2TB HD. That is not bad but getting four 3TB HD striped in a RAID would be a wise investment f you edit Pro Res or Red One R3D files. If you cannot RAID it yourself a local PC repair shop can. I think most people would agree with my comments. Having said that my PC has some extra gadgets you could probably install yourself. Xeon CPUs can be used in multi-socket systems, so a Xeon motherboard is not necessarily limited to a single CPU. For certain tasks that scale well, you can never have enough cores. A system with dual multicore CPUs will perform certain tasks faster than systems limited to a single multicore CPU, assuming that the system has adequate RAM and the application is able to fully take advantage of the extra cores.

Great comments going on this thread! Xeon processors are often specified for computers used as SERVERS, or as mentioned those running dual processors, which you cannot do with an i7.

However, if you check with the Premiere “hardware experts” over at the Adobe forums, the way a Core i7 processes instructions works faster with Premiere than a similar (more expensive) Xeon would.

The combination of a Core i7 processor and GTX graphics card are just IDEAL for squeezing performance out of Premiere, versus more expensive Xeon and Quadro hardware.

Regarding RAID storage, I’d look at an external solution such as G-Tech or LaCie, using USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. When you consider the cost and hassle of creating an internal RAID (is there space in the case for all those drives, enough power, cooling??) why not just get a nice self-contained desktop RAID unit, which also has the benefit of being portable as well? And has a nice warranty?

1050w power, Asus X99-Deluxe II motherboard, Intel Core i7-6800k 3.8GHz (6-core), 32GB RAM, 250GB SSD, GTX 1070, Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, G-Tech G-RAID and Glyph Black Box Pro storage.
