So far going with 48khz AIFFs has done the trick. NO MP3s!

@Libby: I don’t put a broadcast safe filter on every clip, just because of the increased render time if I’m working on something that would need to be rendered (like HDSLR Canon footage in h264), but if the noise happens I at least have a solution that has always worked. If you want to be safe, apply the filter.

@Federico: Glad you’ve been safe so far! For the record, I’ve not used MP3s in FCP for 4-5 years, and it definitely happens with all manner of audio clips: 48 KHZ, 16 bit 24 bit, 44.1, etc….

Thanks for feedback! My ears still hurt from 4 days ago, so for now, I’ll go with both — broadcast safe filter and making sure all my audio is in the correct format. (As a note, I have not been able to find a direct correlation between luma and hell noise, but I put the filter on anyway).

Have been surprised that I haven’t seen any other discussion of this anywhere else, have either of you?

Im having the same problem. Been editing this project for months and today the hell noise appears for no reason. I havent applied any filters, nor is my footage peaking over 100. I tried adding the broadcast safe filter for fun, but it still happens. I also pasting my footage into another sequence and it still makes the noise in the exact part of the clip. The clip itself is totally fine, so Im very puzzled as to why this is happening. Are other people using FCP7 with Snow Leopard?

Used to have the Hell Noise on FCP 6 on my Imac OS 10.4 and 10.5. Now its happening again on my 17inch Macbook Pro 10.6.6 with FCP 7.0.3. Its F-ing terrifying!

Its not because of excess luma (have luma filters on), audio sample rate (my clips are 48khz), overheating (my processors are at 55 degrees C), doesnt matter which OS or which version of FC. Apple! get it together! This has been going on for years and its a BIG problem! Gonna lose my hearing!

Just wanted to chime in here. This has been happening to me for long enough now (through multiple OSs and FCP versions) that I’m starting to be seriously concerned about long-term hearing damage.

It happens several times a week, without warning. I spastically hit the space bar/tear the earphones off my ears. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD it’s loud.

Applying a luma filter seems odd- I certainly can’t be doing that preemptively with every single clip I edit for the rest of my life. I’ll just learn/switch to Avid if that’s the case. I’m not so sure it’s linked to video, though.

When this happens, I break and re-establish the link to the clip’s render file or source clip. I apply an audio filter to the offending clip (one complex enough to give a red render bar), and then delete the filter. Hell noise gone.

But, like others, I have no idea when or why it happens. It’ll play fine several thimes through, then all of a sudden, KSHHHSCREEEECH!!!! It must be 200+ db.
This really, really sucks big time. I wish we had an answer.

It might be a result of mixing 41kHz and 48kHz audio on the same timeline. Hopefully that solves it…

I know this post is probably done, but I couldn’t stop laughing while reading everyone’s comments. “Hell noise” is far from an adequate description. There is no amount of profanity that can describe that noise…

I’ve used a 24″ iMac for the past 3 yrs, FCP, etc…and I have heard the noise maybe 10 times in the past 3 yrs. And like you guys, I have NOT been able to figure it out AT ALL. but it sounds like different from some of you, mine has never happened more than once at a time. As in, I hear the noise, have a heart attack, die, somehow come back to life, and then I just play the timeline again and the noise doesn’t come back. I’ve never tried to fix the problem or change anything, it just comes once, then goes away for a couple months.

Some potentially good news: my iMac died a couple weeks ago, now I’m using my boss’s 8-core Mac Pro, and haven’t heard the noise since! Of course I’m terrified that I just cursed myself by declaring the noise to be gone, but, so far so good. 🙂

Of course, it can be a blessing…one night I was working at like 2 a.m. and I was falling asleep (WITH HEADPHONES ON) and being very unproductive, then, @#$%@#$%@#$%@#$%@#$%, my heart stopped, I went to Heaven, hung out with Jesus (He’s cool), came back, and was WIDE awake for the next couple hours editing! Thanks Apple!

Yeah this is a huge problem. I’ve experienced it on my macbook, iMac, mac pro…
We solved it briefly but now we’ve forgotten how we fixed it. For us it mainly happened bringing in mixed masters from logic and protools. Same audio rate but different integer. That should not be the problem. It almost seems like a mild corruption that leads to that but that doesn’t make a lot of sense. Apple needs to be working on this.

They also need to add native h.264 editing to the timeline but instead they’re working on Final Cut Amateur X v1.2, I’m sure.
