  • Sequence Settings vs Export Settings

This may be a stupid question but here goes…

If I set the aspect ratio to 1920×1080 in the sequence settings, decrease the size of 4K footage by half to fit the smaller size, then export in 4K UHD (3840×2160), will the video retain its original 4K quality or would this be the same as bumping up 1920×1080 video?

Why I ask is that I’ve working on a project with 4K footage in premiere to export 1080p but found out today that 4K export is allowed.

    Thanks.

If you want retain the quality, edit in a 3840×2160 timeline and export as 3840×2160. If you edit the footage in a 1920×1080 timeline you will scale up the footage when exporting and thus loose quality.

If you need to export 1920×1080, edit in a 3840×2160 timeline and export as 1920×1080.

Any mis-match between footage/timeline/export will degrade your footage.

If you want a 4K file as your output, you definitely need to do what Roger said.

However, if you don’t need 4K as your output, some people take 4K into 1080HD comps as a way to “crop” their image if you don’t have action across the entire original clip or need to appear more zoomed in. Also, a large file size savings.

I’m thinking of 2K, but it would still be bigger than the sequence settings which means I need to redo it. Thanks!

    Quick question though:

If I want to export 2K (2560×1440) but in 2:1 aspect ratio, can I set the sequence settings at 2560×1280 and export 2560×1440? Then, it would still be 16:9 but with the black matte on top and bottom. Would this degrade the quality at all?
