April 2, 2007 at 1:00 pmSorry guys, how do you access these secret prefs?
Funny – I’ve never had a render crash until today!…not a massively complex 10 sec comp. There is some motion blur on 2 layers and time remapping with frame blending (Frame Mix) on one layer. Rest of layers have mainly positional/opacity KFs applied and not much else…
When I render with MOblur on and FB set to best quality the render kept crashing halfway through saying “After Effects does not have enough memory”
I ended up having to switch FB to draft quality to get it to finish the render. Obviously I don’t want to have to do this every time. Anyone know what could be the prob?
I have 2GB RAM and a single core Pent4 3GHz and neither seemed to max out on render, so whay the apparent lack of memory?
Thanks for any advice.

April 2, 2007 at 6:41 pmTake alook at this tutorial:
I walk you through setting up the secret/SHecret preferences.
Frankly, I always have this on. AE is notorious for NOT crashing when this is a problem, and instead, wierd stuff starts to happen – such as Text becoming corrupted. I can only assume that this will become an even bigger problem in AE 8 when more and more of AE’s source files are being generated in AE instead of having to use outside elements (Such as images of shapes from Illustrator, or gradients).
I keep it set to between 15-30 frames for a purge. Always. Just my thing.

April 3, 2007 at 9:13 amGreat stuff, Thanks Aharon – I set it to purge 15 frames and it worked a treat! I didn’t even slow down the render. I was worried it would clear RAM cache for previews aswell, but seems to be only renders. So should I just leave that set to 15frames now, until such I time I have a problem again?
Should be getting a dual-core, 4GB ram and Nucleo Pro next week, so that will make me a very happy man and should minimise this kind of thing. New toys always perk me up.
Thanks for the info.
