It looks like my workflow is identical to Ken’s. Well, except I export directly to Compressor rather than exporting to a Quicktime movie first. Other than, we’re doing everything the same. I guess I just need to experiment with CBR of 7-7.2. I’ll also try the Bonsai method.

    Sorry clctech,
    I’d paste the wrong link.
The one can be interesting for you is: “Creating Hi-Def DVDs Using 4.7GB Type 5 DVDs”,
    also in Ken Stone:

think it is good to point out a few things that havent been mentioned here

when creating a dvd burnt using a standard duplicating dvd-r recorder in your computer you must be very careful of a few things (for a replicating disk you can go for much higher bitrates, but this may make little difference to the quality)

    use a branded 4.7 gb dvd-r (not +r)
    use lowest burning speed
use decent burner like the one in your mac
use a total bitrate under 8mbit/sec (that is combined audio and visuals)

    look at these
    https://www.roxio.com/dvd_forum/text_tour_8.jhtml
    https://www.dvdtoday.com/Recordable%20DVD%20Test.htm
    (very good link)

so if you want your disk to be compatible (plays well) you must keep the video under 7.5mbit/sec (actually I have read for reliable software decoding of mpeg stream you must have about 6mbit/sec) and then the audio should be ac3 always (0.25mbit/sec compared to 1.5mbit/sec with Aiff PCM)

always be aware that multiple audio tracks that appear in the dvd studio project all must be the same settings and they will total together as they play out at the same time (they combine to give you your audio bitrate)

also I would watch out about the ac3 presets as they may apply dvd normalisation between tracks. if you have mixed your audio tracks at the same output levels then try this link for an explanation of better presets and normalisation off, its the same interface in the compressor presets window for ac3 https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/a_pack_warmouth.html

    hope this is of help

[clctech] “If I were to use Sorenson or Bitrate, how would I get from FCP to one of those applications? Is there a way to export directly from FCP to them, or would I just create a reference file? What I like about going to Compressor is that FCP doesn’t encode anything, so the footage only gets compressed one time.”

Sorenson and BitVice can both work with reference files.
