Saving Projects Properly

What would you do if your hard drive crashed? That’s why you keep your project file on a separate drive.

Thank you for your reply. As I stated above, I keep backups of my project file on separate drives so that is not the issue.

I wanted to know if there is any marginal performance benefit to keeping the system, the media, the application and the project file ALL on different drives.

Or is it better, from a performance POV to have the media and the project file on the SAME drive?

Hey Harry!

I’m not sure that performance is affected any more by project file placement. In the old days it was probably an issue, but computers are fast today, and there are few data bottlenecks any more between the hard drives and processors.

Personally, I have always kept all of my project files in a single folder at the root level of my system drive. From that folder I copy them to a bunch of other places as backup. I have really never had pervasive issues with FCP since I moved over to FCP, and as you may have noticed, I’m one of the guys who answers questions and offers help here, not one those asking and in need. So, either I’m either just very lucky or very good… Take your pick.
