Ripple delete captions
Posted by Bob Woodhead on November 15, 2020 at 12:17 pmNot a PPRo editor, FCPX myself, and though I’ve searched I can’t find the answer to whether it’s possible to ripple delete captions along with video. Goal is to keep captions synced when editing an already-captioned video.
I’ve got a project that’ll be edited on both PP & X, and this workflow needs to work on both. I’ve tested on X, it’s easy there.
Thanks!

November 16, 2020 at 12:37 amThe caption is attached to the Primary Storyline in FCPX which is not the same in Premiere.
Love FCPX for that.

November 16, 2020 at 12:54 amRight, Like I said, I’m a FCPX editor, so I’m familiar with it’s methods. Looking for the PPro capabilities re: caption ripple edits.

November 16, 2020 at 2:00 amI just tried a few things and nothing that easy.
The only way to keep them to a clip is to subsequence/nested.
Not fun.

November 16, 2020 at 9:38 pmPPro uses a caption stream (track) connected to nothing opposed to FCP which uses independent captions connected to a clip (of whatever type) plus a lane/role.
The only thing you make it somehow comparable – in regards of workflow – is to use “Titles” instead of captions.
If you are on Mac OS you may try my premiereTitles (http://www.spherico.com/filmtools/TitleExchange/PTI/index.html)
This way you can keep working with FCP SRT – if you want – and keep those in sync with Essential Graphic Titles in PPro.
Once finished you can convert the PPro titles to SRT if needed.

November 16, 2020 at 10:17 pmBut if they are titles you still need to attach them to a clip.
I believe the question was to keep the CC attached to a clip while editing at all times.Maybe I got that wrong?

November 16, 2020 at 10:27 pmInteresting, Andreas. So if I read you correctly, the fundamental answer to my OP is ‘no’ – captions don’t ripple delete along with the rest of the timeline. But your tool allows ’round tripping’ to/from SRT and PPro titles. So a workaround almost as good as native, and if things go well, a few more sales for you. 🙂
Not exactly clear on your post Eric, but all I’m looking for is simply to be able to ripple edit a timeline, and have the captions (titles, with Andreas’ tool) ripple as well.
Thanks for the info!

November 17, 2020 at 2:12 amI must have misunderstood your post.
I thought you wanted to be able to ripple a clip and have the CC follow it similar to FCPX.
As I stated, I got that to work by using a SubSequence/Nested type of process.
My bad if that’s not what you were trying to achieve.

You are right. But PPro uses a “real closed caption track”. So every edit you make – like deleting a clip – has to be done to the CC track upfront.
Using EG titles though will allow a ripple delete, still not that elegant and safe(!) as with FCP.

November 17, 2020 at 3:18 pmIve done a ton of CC (docs and features) using both PPr and FCPX.
There is no easy out but thanks to the EG Titles, I will give that a try soon.
I have never done CC before final edit and I dont plan on it ever 🙂

Not such a bad plan 😉
