Activity Forums DaVinci Resolve Resolve Linux – required spec

From the outside the decision to use a very limited number of qualified distributors for the Linux version of Resolve may seem odd, but trust me; some of us here have been building the Resolve on Linux for a few years, and while we have made the construction and installation process considerably more repeatable its not yet at the Mac plug and play stage. We exercise the hardware hard so for ALL our customers to get the real time experience we desire consistency in configuration is key. Few have access to the Nvidia 2200 S4, few know Infiniband, many more cant configure Linux ethernet ports, fibre channel storage or StorNext. We don’t want our customer to get half the great experience. We want you to get the full deal. If we can make this easier in the future we will, for now we know this plan works.

I don’t think anyone is disputing the value of the turnkey Linux solution, or even the price really. I think the oddness is that the Linux version of the software is advertised as $19k… but you can’t actually buy anything for $19k.

One argument is that Linux price helps BMD recoup the R&D cost of the significantly more complex Linux product. I doubt that BMD bought DaVinci with a 1K software product as their endgame.

I think Mac users are getting a subsidized product and I don’t blame BMD for not making it easy for others to build their own Linux systems.

what do you mean “more complexed linux product”?
The Mac version is the same as the Linux version expect Linux allows for cluster computing and SLI plus can use the Quadro Plex… it just allows for more options and isn’t a complete rewrite.

Sorry I just think clocking the Linux in with resellers is crazy.

What if I want to move up to Linux from the Mac version but I don’t need a cluster and only need one machine working with SLI, why should I have to pay a reseller for a machine that is easy to build myself for a lot less?

To me it seems a marketing ploy… advertise Resolve for $19k and get everyone talking about it but in fact its a lot more cause you have to buy a “system” from a middle man.

What if Apple brought out a machine that supported SLI and Quadro Plex as well as clustering… would BMG restrict the use of the hardware and force people to purchase a separate “pro” version which we’d have to purchase through a reseller as a “system”

Well, it’s not a marketing ploy. And you make decent points, nobody is discounting that. But you are only looking at it from your personal perspective (which is to be expected).

The long and the short of it is that we have good reasons to sell it the way we’ve decided to sell it. And that doesn’t mean that things can’t ever change in the future after all, we are known for re-writing the book when it comes to typical process.

Right now it just means that we’ll have to agree to disagree, I know it’s cliché. But for now, let us get the thing selling.

    Sincerely,
