And my statement is based on almost a year of running a GT120 and a GTX580 together in at least 5 Mac Pros running Colorfront software, never turning them off for months at a time, and never having one fail. And, BTW, having that configuration designed, blessed, and supported by Colorfront and its reseller for both us and numerous other customers.
Regardless of what you sometimes seem to think, Jake, I don’t make this stuff up. I have at least as much experience as you do and when I say something here, I’m not guessing. That doesn’t mean I’m always right, but I really don’t take well to your insisting on turning every statement I make into some sort of contest.

No Mike. You’re not running those computers, your company does. If something happens to those computers you will not be paying for the repair from your own packet. It’s not a good idea exceeding computer power envelope and 580 is outside of it. I have yet to see a single user, that is running the 580 inside the tower. Everyone here (much more, than 5 users) only uses 570 for that task, successfully. But, hey, if you’re fine with taking the risk of damaging your own computer, go ahead. I’m not willing to take that chance with my computer and I would strongly advise against doing it, as it may harm the computer, like here https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/277/22982.
You may feel, that I have no better things to do, but to constantly squabble with you, but I feel this opinion is ill advised, that shouldn’t be followed. -
I give up. Clearly my experience means nothing since I didn’t pay for every machine out of my personal bank account. I guess the fact that I set up and am responsible for maintaining every one of them – not to mention that the configuration is approved by a major vendor – is just not valid enough. I bow to your superior experience, intellect, and arrogance.

We also have the GT120/5803GB card combo and know of a few other people running this setup for Resolve, CS6, Nuke, etc. But its not the overclocked 580’s just the standard stock pc model 3GB running OSX10.8.2, if you run that with a quadro4000 i believe it would be too much of a power drain but with gt120 ok. Regardless I would say why not get the external power booster just to be safe ya know, especially if you have 4HD’s RAID, SSD, Decklink, redrocket or whatever? That is a beefy card my friends, i think i found a slightly used one if you need and cant afford a new one:
My interactions via ebay with macvid guy have been really poor gotta say people, terrible customer service. If i were building a new macpro for Resolve with no cubix i think the 120/570 combo is actually a great idea if you don’t want the external power source, BUT that Booster is not expensive and its super easy to set up.
