Of course they are free to do whatever they want.. and I am 100% sure this will increase their user base by a huge amount. I’m just confused how it makes business sense. Sure they can sell some Decklink cards. But you really don’t need the $995 version if you are doing HD since the free version really does everything you need.

Not sure the free version does all you need for HD. But then again I’m not a Davinci user so I can not tell how much limitation the “limitations” really put on you.

How much does only having 2 color correction nodes limits you? What does that actually mean in Resolve?

And what is power mastering and remote grading?

The rest I think you can pretty much live without in HD.

Nodes are kind of like Color’s tabs. Having 2 nodes is like having a primary, and 1 secondary tab available to you and that’s it. You can do a lot with that, but then again there’s even more you can’t do.

    Hi Steve,

Yes, you are correct. Resolve 8.0 can now use CUDA and OpenCL which means that Resolve can now run on ATI graphics GPUs as well as NVIDIA GPUs. I believe OpenCL can be used with GPUs from any company.

When Resolve 8.0 is released, you will be able to run it on the latest iMacs and MacBook Pro 17″ which use ATI graphics chipsets.

Honestly I just sold my ATI 4870, which now I am bummed about because my performance in other apps other than Resolve suffer using the GTX 285 (thanks to OSX’s horrid drivers etc)

How is the performance of Resolve 8 with an ATI card vs a nVidia card?

[Peter Berg] “But you really don’t need the $995 version if you are doing HD since the free version really does everything you need.”

    Not true.
You could use the free version to create simple grades which I think is great. It’s a perfect tool for creating looks on set with the DP / Director. For complex timing and anything over HD though, you’d need the $995 version.

Would love to know the performance gap between CUDA and OpenCL. I bet at the moment CUDA kills it and that my GTX285 will have still been worth it compared to the ATI monster card sitting in a static bag.

I’m really excited about the Noise Reduction stuff and the XML support, I have to say I did sometimes miss the hue curves from color, just because it just took me a bit each time I wanted to replicate it with a qualifier.

I’m a little apprehensive about DaVinci Lite, especially in the short term, but I think that in the long run it’s a good thing. Personally the amount of people I’ve heard of doing their color corrects in FCP has actually grown since color has come out.

I think with this development we colorists have a big job to do to really educate the up-and-coming clientele with what you can really do with a proper color correct. We have to sell our craft and not our tech. Since the beginning of Blackmagic-Design, they have been slashing the equipment costs of high-end work, and I think it will be a good thing overall, since there are fewer and fewer things I have to say no to clients about.

It’s our jobs as colorists to sell ourselves, and not hide behind our consoles.

Oh, I’d also be curious if they updated the speed-change algorithms. Currently I believe all we have is frame removal/frame duplication. Will we see anything of more finishing quality?

That’s the last kind of element that seems to require roundtripping through After Effects.

I’m at NAB and spent time looking through the update. Blown away. Personally, I am not the least bit threatened by the free version. There is so much more that we can do in the full version, and for DPs to be able to set a basic look on set with the same tool cannot be anything but good. I can hardly believe just how much BM has added to what we all have been wishing for. Keying, HDRx blending, motion smoothing, RGB mixing, multi-track, XML!!!!, blending modes, and many more. way to go BM. It felt good to shake Peter C’s hand.

It was wonderful to meet so many from the Resolve community today. Thank you for taking the time to visit BMD, SL220 @ NAB.

Just FYI, the Open CL is working well on the iMac and MacBook Pro up to HD resolution. At this time the real time noise reduction is only available on the Nvidia CUDA graphics cards and CUDA should still be considered for performance application where more you need more than the one GPU card limit that exists on Open CL.

We also demoed today, Cinema DNG RAW file support with our new BMD designed high quality debayer, Epic 5K, multiple layer AAF import from Avid and ALe export, and one of my favorites, Canon 5D conform via XML from FCP where every clip starts at :00 timecode, yet they all conform to the right spot on the timeline.

For those FCP users, after grading and XML export to FCP, you can import the sequence and amend the edit, as we know everyone needs to, and then in FCP export a new XML. Resolve will import the XML into the previous graded session and then automatically color trace all the previous shots, leaving just the changed shots to grade and send back to FCP, so constant edit changes are handled easily.

    More news tomorrow.

    Peter
