  • Rendering WAV produces WDP?

Posted by Alfredo Rodriguez on August 20, 2015 at 2:22 am

I’ve never heard of *.wdp file extension, but after recently upgrading to SSD drives and doing migration/re-installing stuff, when I render audio files from Sony Vegas Pro 13 using the Wave (Microsoft)(*.wav) output format, the Name field shows *.wdp and not *.wav

The icon of the rendered audio file doesn’t look like anything I’ve seen before. However, by renaming the file with a wav extension, this fixes the icon instantly and my PC can play it using Win Media Player.

What’s going on here? How do I get my wav extension back? I checked Device Manager and all my drivers are up to date.

You probably have some software installed that is hijacking/overwriting
    your wave audio files.

I am running SVP 12, so I am not sure what SVP 13 does. However, when I choose a render format such as WAV, Vegas fills in the extension to be used for the rendered file. So, if my file name is Project A, as soon as I click on a wav option, SVP will fill in the .wav extension as part of the file name. Is this what you are seeing when you render?

That is very likely, Steve. I just installed Reaper and Cubase for doing MIDI musical projects. I installed the recommended ASIO driver (Steingberg makes it, I think) but I don’t see how this would affect Sony Vegas or how that relates to WAV.

If it IS “overwriting” it, as you said, how do I go about fixing it? Is WAV a Microsoft thing? Should I consult Microsoft or search for special drivers? Not sure where to start to handle this issue with the wav extension

That’s the problem, Bob. When I am at the render window, I click on the Wave (Microsoft)(*.wav) output format. So my file which is named “Project A” becomes “ProjectA.wdp” even though the output format clearly shows (*.wav)

I don’t think SVP 13 is special in this sense that it confuses a wav for wdp. I’m googling what ‘wdp’ is and not much comes up. Never heard of it.

    That’s very odd indeed.
That .wdp file is actually a Windows Media Photo file, it’s developed by Microsoft and is similar to the .jpg format and used for high-resolution digital photographs. (that it’s disclaimer), so im not really sure whats
    going on with your system.
Installed any photo/image based software lately?

What happens if you manually change the extension to wav? Although it appears that something has altered Windows mapping of file types. I think you said that it is generating a wav file. Therefore, all you need to do is manually override the extension.

I still have a voice recognition package that, as part of its installation, took it upon itself to alter Windows’ mapping of file types and their default application software. It seized something like .tif files as its own even though it is not a photo application. That package still resides on an old xp system because I refuse to allow it to alter those relationships again on newer systems. I would try Google to look for a way to fix the file relationship information.

if I rename it prior to clicking Render, it does the darnest thing: it will still add “wdp” to the new extension, so “Project A” turns from “Project A.wav” into “Project A.wav.wdp”….silliest thing I’ve ever seen. It just has to get the last word in!! ha ha ha…

Ok. I appreciate all the input, guys. Looks like this is not a Vegas issue, but a Windows issue. I’ll look around. Might be a registry problem, from what I gather on the interwebz. If I solve this, I will definitely return to share my solution. I always give back to the community which helps me in return 🙂

You don’t have Word Perfect installed, do you? It also uses a .wdp extension. This is totally weird. Some program somewhere is hijacking your wav renders and renaming them, much like association icons. A true mystery. Hope you solve it.

Please post back if you figure out what software is responsible for this so that everyone else can avoid it. Do you have a system back up that you can fall back on? That has saved my bacon more than once.
