January 16, 2013 at 3:59 pmthis could be some insight…
I was invited to be a beta tester for 12 and 2 days after i downloaded it to try out – the product was released. So much for testing. -

January 18, 2013 at 8:26 pmJust one other datapoint… awhile back, I was working on a fairly complex animation for work. I had recently upgraded to Vegas 11 — not the ideal thing to do with you’re in a rush situation. I ran into exactly the same kind of problem described here: my video would render to a point, then crash… didn’t actually matter which CODEC I was writing to.
That’s actually important… if you’re crashing writing to AVC, for example, but can render to something else, that’s an easy workaround: just render to something else, then render that to AVC if you need AVC. But that didn’t work for me.
So here’s how I at least found the problem (which only helps if there’s a problem you can actually find). I rendered to MPEG-2 TS (HDV or an MPEG-2 Blu-ray format, doesn’t matter all that much). You want that because a TS file doesn’t have to be closed like some other video types. So after Vegas crashes, you have evidence of exactly where it crashed. So I loaded up the HDV output, tracked down the failure point. Turns out I was using some new plug-in there for an effect. Took that out, and the whole timeline rendered.
Of course, it could have been something else. But here’s the thing… if the problem wasn’t obvious, try that render again, only with the TS file overlaying the part already rendered. That should smartrender, go fast, and well… sometimes it still crashes. Sometimes it doesn’t… you can have bugs that just gang up on each other and cause a crash for no externally observable reason. Annoying, sure, but when you have a deadline, a work-around is way better than failing, or even staying up all night porting the whole video to an older version of Vegas.

January 21, 2013 at 3:06 pmHi Guys!
Here is what Sony Support told me to do. Very weird and did no work. The only render I could make was .mxf. Regards! JM
Hi Jorge,
Thank you for contacting Sony Creative Software.
Lets have you install the SCS application to a newly created administrator profile. This will require uninstalling the software, creating a new user account, logging off the old user account and logging onto the newly created administrator account, then installing and activating the app on the new administrator account. This allows the software to make the necessary changes needed to the registry. Please consult the Help and Support Center in your Windows operating system for specific directions regarding creating a new user account with full administrator rights.
Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall the SCS software if it is currently installed.
Now go to My Computer and browse to “C:Program FilesSony Setup” and delete the folders within.
Next, it’s time to create a new user account with administrative privileges. Go to Control Panel > User Accounts. Select “Add New User” and type in a new name for the new user account. When asked what permissions level to assign to the account, select Administrator.
Then go to Start menu and choose “Logoff” or just restart the computer to switch users. Be sure to log into the new user account, reinstall the program, and register the application.
Once the application is up and running you can log back to your normal user account. Now go to Control Panel > User Accounts and remove the test account from your computer.
If you still have a follow-up question on this particular incident, please feel free to update it. If you have a completely different question, please create a new incident.
Sincerely,
Customer Service & Technical Support

January 21, 2013 at 3:41 pmVery disappointing. Thanks for reporting Jorge.
I’ll consider switching to Adobe Premiere as I honestly no longer find Sony to provide good pro quality editing software nor support.
Makes me wonder if SCS is a software shop of a handful of developers.
Back to more editing… and crashes.
Gilles
