Relink Issue

It has it’s advantages when passing projects off to other editors if relinking media has to happen. It takes a lot less time to relink footage from certain popular cameras.

This has greatly improved with the last pro video update though. In the other cases staying as native as possible is how I prefer to go.

Are you on a SAN? If so then yeah, there isn’t any advantage to have FCP X wrap QT files in most cases.

Yes.

Meaning, there are an unlimited amount of places to setup where FCPX media go upon import, with the default being inside the library. Even with best practices setup, people make mistakes, or trash preferences, or simply ignore workflow methods. So, instead of having to correct or manage other people’s workflow mistakes/bad habits, it’s much easier to leave the media in one place, and everyone does a drag/drop in to the library. I wish there was a button to “Leave in Place” when accessing certain MXF files in a camera card structure.

Hi all,

Thanks for the help, but I actually figured out what was going on. For some reason, my Footage Event lost it’s little box and star and all of my footage moved into my Projects event.

I created a new event called Footage Relink, moved all of my missing footage in there and used the Reimport from Camera/Archive.

(I had already copied over the original camera footage from my producers ext drive, thank jeebus for her!)

So, it seems the fact that my footage moved to the Projects event after the loss of the hard drive was the culprit. Thanks all!

By default projects are in an event that also contains the media.
You have to decide to create a new event and then create a new project in that new event to end up with separate events for the two elements.
Though when you open an event, projects are listed separately from the media with header labels – sort of like auto-folders within the event. You can also add actual folders in an event but for the most party not needed since adding keywords gives you very sophisticated ability to sort components as you like. I don’t think you can delete an event’s box/star icons. you can delete an event, but the contents of it will be deleted as well. It’s not my favorite design element of FCP X. I don’t see any upside compared to just a simple folder structure within a master folder which I would call a “project”. But its not all that different in terms of function and i’ve gotten used to it.

I think you solved the problem by reimporting the media. It sounds like you moved the media to a new location somehow and/or FC just lost the path to the media. What I have learned is, if the media is still on the Mac or media drive somewhere, you can relink to it. And within FC, you can highlight the library and then move the footage where ever you prefer by looking in the inspector and first use “storage location> modify settings” and then ” in library>consolidating” and select the finder or media drive location where you would like the imported media/cache/fc back- ups to be kept.
Sometimes the links get corrupted on their own and sometimes end users mess themselves up. Either way, if the media still exists, it can be fixed.
