May 25, 2008 at 4:23 pmWell, it’s the difference between scrubbing through pre-composited frames in real-time in Premiere (i.e. those that have been rendered out of AFX), or trying to scrub through frames that have to be comped on a frame-by-frame basis and make Premiere communicate as quickly as possible with your AFX project file so it knows how to handle the comp and AFX-specific effects. Look at it this way. If you have a shot in an AFX comp that you can’t watch in real-time in AFX, and you have to do a RAM preview to view properly, then what makes you think you’ll be able to watch it in real-time in Premiere which, as far as I can tell isn’t as robust a program as AFX as far as processing huge amounts of data? Maybe that works OK on some of the newer quad core uber workstations, but certainly not on mine. I tried once and quickly saw that it was folly.
Besides, on more of a philosophical level, I don’t want to get in the habit of a work flow that doesn’t apply to other compositing software. I see it as a potential crutch. If I end up working for a company that uses Fusion instead of AFX, I’d like to already have a good general work flow in place for working between my compositor and my video editor that can be applied across the board.
