December 7, 2010 at 10:16 pmHey Darin,
I’m a little nervous now about the RR card, based on the things you mentioned.
Did you ever have stutter problems playing in FCP or AVID?I think I may have as well, even for super simple stuff like NTSC. I’m wondering if I’ve ste up the RAID array poorly. For example I have a 64k blocksize (which I regret setting so small, but never bothered to change once I saw the disk speed.) Also I have the drives spinning down after 15 minutes.
Perhaps its not the card but the settings? Do you have any thoughts on this?

December 7, 2010 at 10:21 pmNeither Avid nor FCP support REDROCKET for playback.
Avid 5.0 can use it for exporting, however.

December 12, 2010 at 1:58 pmHey Darin,
Have you used that same RocketRAID card in Scratch by chance?
I’m beginning to think the RocketRaid has been the cause of my problems. But it could be a driver thing in OSX, or simply how I set up the RAID when I formatted it.
Have you tested your array with a PC, (i.e. scratch?)
If it doesn’t work in scratch either, we might have both set the RAID block size too small.

December 12, 2010 at 8:18 pmWarren I really hope they continue to support the big guys. One of my biggest fears is, this is an End Of Life Product. Will this be final touch, color all over again.. Support completely dumped when mac purchased it.. I REALLY HOPE NOT. For that reason I am learning the base light and getting familiar once again with my old friend the Lustre and even looking at the power of nucoda.
The resolve stop start? Not a big deal at all. I still use it a work.. If you watch what it does. A start does exactly what the stop does. It was really a unnecessary function that I would guess was put in after the fact to deal with a problem. The difference I see, and correct me if i’m wrong, is the new versions are built with completely off the shelf product.. No specifically designed hardware like the past versions.
The code has come along way due to the high end user creating a giant list of needed functions and documented problems. This was done in a professional environment and checked by davinci support. The support team could really see the issues and how the system is configured. I don’t know how its going to work with everyone trying everything and no real support in place..
As far as dpx is concerned I have found the file based workflow the best of the best.. If i have one bad frame I send one fixed frame.. Not a complete re-render of the entire qt file..
My emails and calls to davinci are not being answered so I am being forced to post on the forum in hopes someone is reading. I do this all for the love of the craft and am got getting paid in any way..
Resolve is my tool of choice for now. I love it.. We will see what the future brings.

December 12, 2010 at 8:27 pmIt tied several block sizes on the rocket raid set up and now having it working in my 07 8 core mac pro.. (my old color box) It now serves as an extra fcp, lightroom, and internet box.
I did not see a huge difference using the different sector size. I have not used it on my 6 year old pc workstation (hp xw8200).. I am running dual link scsi u320 set up on that system.. I get real time playback of 2k dpx frames without issues on my old, old pc.
Hook that same pc up to the solid state storage I am testing and I get real time 4k playback on that same old pc.

December 12, 2010 at 8:38 pmDo you happen to know what sector sizes you tried?
I think I’m at 128k.

December 12, 2010 at 8:53 pmSorry I never got it working as it should using the resolve. The rocketraid card is living in my old 07 mac pro. I jumped to fibre for the resolve and haven’t looked back.

March 12, 2011 at 8:50 pmSolution:
Bad drives, confirmed with 2 other brands of RAID cards.
The seagate 7200.11 1.5TB has bad firmware – version CC1H.I did switch to an ATTO card anyway, specifically for their support department. ATTO has a list of good and bad drives which I’d advise anyone to read before making a purchase.
