Oh damn, you mean you don’t have to connect any cables to the drives, it’s kind of built-in plugged ? Very bad, very bad Apple, would be so easy to do into a PC. Ok well, I’ll keep looking for external RAID. Do you have other suggestions apart of the very nice looking 3ware ?

    Thanks a lot !

The CalDigit S2VR HD seems to be exactly what I need, for 2K$.

We killed two of them here in about 3 months time so we’re looking elsewhere right now. Just FYI.

Sure it’s easy to find it, but not cheaply. Fibre Channel gives you all the flexibility you need.

If you’re going to run SATA or anything at RAID 0, just be sure to run a backup unit at ALL times. When the CalDigit’s went sour on us, we had everything backed up on a LaCie 2TB FW800 unit that let us keep working. Without that, we were screwed.

Protected is RAID 1, meaning if you have four 500GB drives in there, you only get 1TB of storage. The drives are mirrored, so two sets of 500GB raided drives. And the drive performance isn’t as fast. Fast enough for DVCPRO HD and uncompressed SD setups, but not for Uncompressed HD.

Raid 5 is a tough thing to find…cheaply.

yep, don’t think it’s available anywhere but Fibre Channel right now. Of course all this could go out the window in a few weeks in Vegas.

Well, as I pointed out, Sidecar has a SATA solution:
