[Dan Brockett] “Imagine says its Duel’s fault, their drivers have a conflict.”

Yeah, I don’t know abot the Duel. I have heard about a lot of problems with the duel both on this forum and in person from collegaues. I have never used one as we use a PCD20.

    Oh geez…

    From the P2 Genie Website:

The Mac version is currently unavailable. Unfortunately we can’t say for sure when it will be available again.”

I am using a 17″ MacBook Pro Laptop and I am looking at 4TB Caldigit VR and would be using Carbon Copy Cloner. I would like to set up the Caldigit VR as a Raid 0 and then have all the files backed up on another hard drive. If I don’t have to, I don’t want to use Raid 1. Any Suggestions on how to back up the VR with the MacBook Pro using Raid 0? Any suggestions which back up drive to get? Any Suggestions on how to set up this Raid System?

    Thank you,
    Chad

    Chad,

Don’t get the habit of attaching new questions to threads that are months old please. That’s just not good for anyone, including you. Okay?

[Chad Graves] “I don’t want to use Raid 1.”

Definitely don’t use Raid 1. That’s a total waste of your hardware resources and money.

So, use the VR (great piece of equipment BTW) for all it’s worth at it’s highest performance level, which is Raid 0. The performance of the VR will vastly improve your day to day editing experience and will get you the most value for your dollars.

For backup, you don’t need Carbon Copy Cloner, just copy your media files to inexpensive bare 500Gb or 1Tb SATA drives that you hookup to a USB “universal drive adapter,” like the one at the following link: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U2NV2SPATA/ . Of course, make sure you format the drives as Mac Extended, and when full, just put them on the self for safe keeping.

This works perfectly and it is the best value by far. Got it?

    David,

Thank you for answering my questions. Yeah, I am a rookie on this forum, first day on it. That is good to know thou. What is Mac Extended? I am trying to keep this simple, but If I get the 4 TB Caldigit VR and it is made up of 2 2TB Hard Drives, I get the inexpensive 500gb or 1 TB SATA Drives. Assuming the 2 2 TB VR Hard Drives would be full, Would it work this way that I could use 4 500gb hard drives for each 2 TB Drive or 2 1 TB hard drive for each 2 TB Drive? Please Let me know, if that question sounded complicated or not.

    Thank you,
    Chad

[Chad Graves] ” I get the inexpensive 500gb or 1 TB SATA Drives.”

Bad Idea, especially if you are talking about reading and writing video, the last thing you want is the inexpensive drives, those will usually have sub-standard performance and cache that is required for video processing and playback.

    Gary,

I recommended that Chad buy inexpensive SATA drives for backup purposes only, not for playing video. This way he can run the VR he wants to buy at Raid 0 without fear.

BTW, there are very inexpensive, but very good SATA drives out there now. Consumer level Hitachi SATA drives are used in many of the top Raids, and the enterprise drives cost not much more.

[Chad Graves] “What is Mac Extended?”

That’s the format for all drives used in all Macs. Windows uses both FAT32 and NTFS formatting, both of which have issues running in the Mac world.

In answer to your other questions…

First, never fill any of these drives. They all need to have at least a minimum of 10% free space. Raids require even more free space – 15% to 20% free space should be considered full.

Second, backing up media is not like backing up a whole system where you are constantly worrying about all kinds of things changing on a daily basis. One can only capture so much media in a day, so rather than concerning yourself with a giant backup of all 4Tb, just backup the media that you capture at the end of each day, and do it to a bare drive at a size that makes the most sense. 1Tb drives are now pretty much the sweet spot for cost, size, and overall convenience. Keep in mind, you most likely won’t even need the backups, SATA drives are vastly more robust and failure-proof than any of the drive before.

    Does this all make sense?

I stand corrected, I had not been following the entire thread.
