[Gigi Harris] “thanks. Did it!!! When I open in videos in Quicktime 7 they play great now. WhenI open with quicktime 10, they look pretty bad. Should I just get quicktime 10 off my operating system, or will I screw things up with snow leopard by doing that. I don’t know which quicktime is opening with FCP.”
    DON”T TOUCH QT X.
SL can lives without QT 7, but not without QT X.
Left click any H264 on the Finder to open the File Info window, and set QT 7 as default player.
    You must check “Change all”.

[Gigi Harris] “. How do I place quicktime 7 in the doc. It sits in disc utility and I can’t figure out how to place it there.”
Let QT be on that place.
Drag the QT icon to your Dock to have it easily available.

[Gigi Harris] “How do I place quicktime 7 in the doc.”

Simply drag it from the Utilities folder and drop it where you’d like it on the dock.

[Gigi Harris] “how do I make quicktime 7 the default quicktime.”

From the Finder, select any QT file (i.e. .mov file), then right click, choose Open With>>Other, now check the “Always Open With” box, and now make sure to direct it to QT 7 in the Utilities folder, then hit “okay.”

The issues sound resolved, but I felt compelled to comment on two of the side notes …

[Gigi Harris] “Need to go back to my basic training … Sad, very sad!!!”

It’s definitely great to know the tools well, but don’t beat yourself up either … just one generation back, many of the best editors could barely open the software by themselves since most shops had an IT guy who did everything up to that point … sort of like a mechanic-driver relationship. In fact, I’ve worked several places where editors weren’t allowed to touch anything beyond the inside of the editing package … just like an editor didn’t open up a tape machine anywhere with staff Engineers. Industry changes just required/allowed drivers to start being their own mechanics. It was also more common than today to have separate “technical editors” and “creative editors”. I guess it is possible to be good at something without being good at everything.

By the way, to me, establishing a permanent position at “the grown up table” is among lifetime goals since, in my family, it’s even possible to be demoted.

You’re a sweetheart David. Thanks for the words of encouragement.
As far as the grownup table, I still haven’t made it there. I didn’t think anyone else in the world had grown up table issues. It’s good to know I am not alone!!!

I followed instructions for having quicktime 7 be my default for opening movies. It worked for that individual clip. the problem is , I have hundreds. It seems that I have to do that one at a time to have each clip open with QT 7 not 10. what I really need is for any movie at any time in any application to open using quicktime 7. I did a side by side comparison by opening the same clip one with quicktime 10 and another with quicktime seven and me and the gentleman I was editing with today could not believe how much jerky the quicktime 10 clip was. I am really noticing it in fcp and this is happening on clips that have no effects and need no rendering as well as clips already rendered. I will go insane if I have to keep watching jerky video. I’m afraid to output from the timeline thats for sure. I am not sure what will happen with print to video, which I have to do often for clients as well as wedding companies i shoot for. I sure wish there was a way to totally trash QT 10 and replace it with 7. But I realize apple has made that impossible. Any ideas would be really appreciated. Thanks for putting up with all these endless questions. I am so totally appreciative of you all!!!!

    Hi Gigi,
Open a QT file Info Window:

When you had set “Open with..” QT 7 as default application, you must click the “Change All” button.
You may need to do that not only for QT files (.mov), but also for MP4 files.

I have also had the same problems but have resolved them with QT7. However, does FCP use 10 or 7 when compressing off the timeline? I had flawless results prior to Snow Leopard, QT10, etc.

Now I have had some sound issues when compressing as well as mixed results overall when compressing off timeline.

    Any thoughts?
