    Hi Daniel,
I’ve stacked the six clips just to show that they were exported correctly from FC.
I’ve just put a text in a sequence and I’ve exported with the three different codecs.
One time I’ve exported without render the sequence and a second time with the sequence already rendered.
The six times FC exported with the Alpha.
Just set Animation, NONE and Planar RGB. The three of them Millions+ of course.

    Rafael,

Don’t use text as the test. That may be skewing your results.

In my test a created a graphic with a black hole (nothing) in the upper right quadrant of the frame. The I exported twice, first an unrendered version, and then a rendered version. I imported them back into FCP and placed them over the solid pink layer and a text layer that says “ALPHA WORKS.”

As you see in the results below, the alpha channel only works in the version that was unrendered before exporting.

    Hi David,
    OK. No Text.
    – Sequence Animation Millions+.
    – I’ve just put two cropped Color Mattes, letting a hole in the upper-right corner.
    – Export without rendering and export after rendering.
Back to FC I put the clips in a sequence as you can see.

In both cases the clips keeps his Alpha.

There’s a chance this may only have happened because I was in DVCProHD. Again since I believe it’s a programming fluke, it could be as strange and specific as something with my exact codec, frame rate, color depth, number and kind of layers of filtration, any number of things. This is an undocumented situation. If you were to recreate it, it might have to be exactly the same as my situation. Your recreation is still not close to that. What would be interesting is to see if my computer or David’s computer does that same thing with YOUR example above.

    Hey Rafael,

That’s weird!!! You’ve just got the magic tough I guess, there’s just no other explanation.

    Really strange David.
Are all of you exporting QT (no Conversion) from a sequence with Millions+?
I do not agree with Daniel about codec, bit-depth, layers, etc.
You should be able to export with an Alpha channel as long as there is a transparency in your picture and you use a codec supporting Alpha whatever the footage, size, pixels..
I think must be something in the process. FC or QT.
Just for curiosity, open the render files with QT or FC and look is they are tagged as Millions +.
They should if the sequence codec is Millions+.

[Rafael Amador] “Just for curiosity, open the render files with QT or FC and look is they are tagged as Millions +.

The exported clips are Millions +, but not the sequence settings. If you’re doing the test with a sequence created as Animation codec Millions +, then that might explain why you’re having different results. Everyone else is just exporting clips with the animation codec at Millions + from a timeline their editing with a typical editing codec.

Never mind, that doesn’t change the results either. I just tested it.

Anyway with the sequence set as “Millions” you can never get Alpha.
