June 15, 2009 at 11:28 pmI think this has all been pretty well covered, but AE is excellent at compositing and improving your 3D assets, although not necessarily creating them.
I understand your frustrations, but knowing the limitations of the program is an essential step toward exploring potential ways to sidestep those limitations, or at least know when a different tool is better suited 🙂
Here’s an example of cheap-o parallax mapping using the displacement map effect and some expressions in AE:

It is, of course, very limited and you can get better results with a plug-in, but this is just an example of bending the ‘rules.’
