February 5, 2008 at 4:17 am[Chris Borjis] “yes, and before I knew much about it, I would dismiss it automatically because of that fact.
But after actually looking closely at it, doing generation loss tests, testing compositing round trips: FCP to AE to FCP and also reading about Walter & Shane’s successes, I decided that full raster is a non-issue.”
I know a camera operator who swears by upconverted DV50. He claims it looks better than HD. And in the case of comparing it to HDV, he’s probably right. Anyway, it’s interesting that he happens to own and operate a Panasonic DV50 camera.

February 5, 2008 at 6:21 amIn our less than scientific testing we found Prores to be slightly better than DVCpro HD. We put name supers on clips, exported them in both codecs and then reimported them into FCP. Then we loaded them in at 200% in the canvas to have a look at the supers. There was a noticeable difference in the supers at this magnification. But then we were zooming in and looking for problems, at 100% or playing out to any of our HD or SD CRT monitors the differences were slight. These tests were using normal Prores.
But we haven’t seen any of the problems that you are describing. We’ve switched our entire facility over to Prores for HD mastering on two different series and it’s working well.
