USB might work in a pinch, but that pinch is where your reputation goes down the drain.

For example, if you’re laying off to tape on a tight deadline, and you get a glitch everytime you edit to tape (albeit at a different spot) then the slightly higher price for a better drive subsystem seems money well spent.

This board is biased in favor of a professional way of working, which means reliability under all circumstances.

For the customer, any technical glitch is a failing of the editor.

How do you guys feel about a G-Tech “G-Raid2” connected to my iMac (2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo) via Firewire 800 for editing ProRes 145? Is it really better than, say, a single LaCie d2 Quadra drive via Firewire 800?

The two drives in the G-Raid can be configured three ways, as two independent single drives ( JBOD), as Raid-0 (the two drives striped together), or as Raid-1 (mirrored).

If the two drives in the G-Raid are striped together in a Raid-0 (as it comes from the factory) the throughput will be considerably higher (nearly 2x) that a single drive.

I’ve just got a hmc151 that works with sd cards, and the only connection cable available is a usb 2.0.
since I work on a MAC how do I do to transfer data to fcp?
thanks you very much for your advice

You use LOG AND TRANSFER…you use that for all tapeless formats, and firewire is not needed. You only need firewire for TAPE capture.
