They have been 10b codecs with Alpha channel available since a long time.
I’m using Sheer since 5 years or so.
The difference is huge but curiously graphic people never had shown any interest on that.
No way to convince them that some times there are better options that the 8b Alpha embed in their beloved 8b RGB Still sequences.

They will work in FCP 6 READ ONLY if you have the latest Quicktime installed . Quicktime installs the reader codec automatically.

You cannot render to those codecs.

    …here’s a question:

my designer doesn’t have FCP. But can he get ProRes4444 as a codec to render to? He renders from After Effects CS4.

No.To output to Proress you need FC installed.
QT time have the “decoder’ side, but not the “encoder”.

[Ben Holmes] “And yet again on the cow, if I’d read Gary’s response about LT below I’d see there was a quality loss. I think I’ll stick to a G-Raid and standard ProRes for 1080i work… “

    Ben
yes there is some loss, but for many users comfortable with DVCPROHD workflows, LT is more than enough (they are close enough to the same bit rate) for their needs.

Its always about making a workflow efficient for your project, I know of a major cable channel that is using ProRes Proxy for all of their on-air content.

You could install your own copy of FCP on the designers machine. You will not be able to use both copies at once (if on same network) but at least Apple makes it a lot easier to change computer than Adobe…

And if your designer uses a PC?

Mortens means that there is not legal impediment in installing FC in two computers, as long as you run it one at a time.
If your designer have a PC, will need to change it for a Mac if he wants to export Prores.

[Rafael Amador] “If your designer have a PC, will need to change it for a Mac if he wants to export Prores.”

That’s my point. Apple needs to open up these codecs so designers can encode to them without buying a Mac and FCS. If they want to charge for the codecs they should, but not being able to encode to ProRes (in any flavor) without purchasing a full edit suite ultimately means more workarounds and work for the editor.

Sure michael, Apple know how this would make things easier, and sure they had meditated about. I’m sure that if they don’t do it is because they consider that this would harm the interests of Apple. Nothing to complain about this position from a private company. I’m sure they don’t do it to complicate our life.
What Apple and other should do is to give a chance to some third part solutions (better than their owns) that are in the market since long time. For example I could be working fully Uncompress if they would supports “Sheer” (the best codec of the world). Instead of that, we’ve got a candy (Proress 4444) from Apple.
