I agree. Remove media manager if you’re not planning on using it. I had some issues with it in version 7 (8 is fine though).

    Jan,

Send me a real email to kenwood@thesportsresort.com and I’ll find a way to get you a copy of Depend Checker.

Also, you can just stop MSSQL as a service. And, i’m pretty sure that MM can be un-installed from Add/Rem programs.
Unless you are a really big film house I doubt you will need it.

I’ll see if I can find simple docs for DepChk. Basically, you start it in background and tell it which program you want to check. It has a foreground program that will show all of the dependencies. It is for programmers but I have found it useful in cases like yours.

    Jan,

    Here is the link: https://www.dependencywalker.com/

I had the name wrong, it’s Dependency Walker not checker.

    Try it!

    Jan,

Here is how I would proceed using Dependency Walker:

Install on the other PC where Vegas is operational. Run it against vegas.exe.
Then, install on dual Xeon PC where Vegas is failing. Run the same test. You should see some data that may lead to solution.

I’m also wonder if you have all of the pre-requisites for Vegas.
I’m not certain but doesn’t there need to be a certain version of .NET installed?

With all that has been tried with no success, and a lot of input and inspiration from Ken, I got thinking about some of the main differences in hardware between the two machines. Everything was pretty similar. Of course the main difference being two duo core processors vs one duo core. They both have Nvidia graphics cards which were interchanged and functioned on the one computer. The problem computer does have the matrox card, which has not been installed in the other machine. another difference is that the problem machine has an M-Audio Revolution 5.1 audio card and the working machine uses onboard audio. Before taking out one of the Xeons and uninstalling the Matrox system, I thought I would try the simplest things first. When I was on the phone with Sony tech support for a couple of hours, I remember him having me boot in safe mode which made the splash screen freeze rather than just disappear. One of my assistants who is in computer school thought I should take note at what point the screen freezes in safe mode. It was when it tried to build the audio engine. I took out the M-Audio card rebooted, and launched Vegas Pro 8a with no issues what so ever. My disappointment is that Sony support knew everything installed in my system, but didn’t consider the audio card even after they had me boot in safe mode with the same results.
I would like to thank all who read and contributed in the solution of this problem. A special thanks to Ken who spent a great deal of time emailing me and troubleshooting. This collection of knowledge and willingness to help others is what makes Creative Cow what it is….a valuable resource.

    My gratitude to all.

I have a Dell XPS 720 H2C with intel core duo 6850 processor (3.00 GHZ overclocked to 3.67 GHZ), 4 GB of RAM, dual nvidia 8800 ultra cards, running vista 32-bit.

I bought this beast so that I could edit and render HD video (sony vegas pro 8.0b) with no issues…I am having major issues. When editing, the video doesn’t stream but skips, slows, hesitates etc.

I have ended a lot of useless processes, checked memory, spyware, virus scan etc. I guess I am going to try and do a clean install, if this doesnt work, I guess there is something wrong with the hardware (but dell knows nothing about their computers so I’m not too optimistic that they will be able to help). This is incredibly frustrating, does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

    Thanks a lot.

If you still want the solution then I can tell…

The problem is not with hardware or sony vegas. Your Windwos Terminal Services is disabled.

To enable it go to Start > Run > services.msc

Not at the right panel look for “Terminal Services”. Right click on it then click properties. Now see the “Service Status” if its “Stopped” then Click start. If you cannot click on start then click on startup type drop down list and select “Automatic” then restart your computer. And its done!

I was having similar problem then I enabled Terminal Services and vegas stopped giving this error message.

    Thanks
