February 20, 2012 at 12:58 amIt’s now 2012 and people are still finding this thread looking for answers. (me)
Before posting a question, I search to see if it’s been asked. Modern answers to old posts may not be high priority to the original person who asked, but odds are fairly good that people are still having the problem, so a modern answer will be found by modern seekers.

February 20, 2012 at 1:26 amYou can’t edit .mp4 files in FCP, you must first transcode to a codec that FCP likes and recognizes as a realtime codec, preferably ProRes 422. If you don’t know how to do that, use the search feature to search this forum for “transcode” or search Youtube for “FCP transcode.” Much to the chagrin of all those who create and sell tutorials, there are zillions of great free tutorials on Youtube these days.

March 17, 2013 at 1:31 amEmily – thanks for the tip. Even though the original post was old, as we know, everything on the Internet lives forever and you sent me in the right direction.

June 14, 2013 at 9:22 ammp4 can be accepted by fcp natively, but not the special one, if your mp4 files can`t be edited with fcp, you can decode the mp4 to fcpmov.
