Also, Tim, I realized that I misspoke,

I said “If you Keep your editing PC up to date and dont use the web you will “never” get malware. That’s because malware basically comes from one of two places: E-mail, and compromised websites. The third possibility, a worm from an infected PC on your network, is very very unlikely if you keep your computers updated.”

And I recall your response, which was that you needed the interent and not using it would be a big hardship.

What I meant to say was that if you didn’t use the web and kept your computer updated, you wouldn’t get Malware even without an Antimalware program.

I’ve been editing on windows for 6 years with totally unprotected computers. Ok, not totally unprotected, but not protected by any program that’s running all the time. I have backups and Malware cleanup programs installed and ready should I need them, but nothing actively scanning.

I haven’t had a single problem on my edit machines in those 5 years.

I know what you’re thinking: “How does he know there’s nothing wrong? it could have got in with out him noticing”. You’re right, of course, but it’s unlikely. I monitor and scan my computer regularly.

Defrag mostly. If it gets the typical “install/test/uninstall”, a good HDD wipe & start fresh is good.

Overall this has been one of the most level-headed mac vs pc threads in a very long time. The goal of a thread like this is not so much “what is best?” but rather “what works best for the individual user?”

Interesting reading as we consider the need to upgrade windows machines for better CS5 performance – but like many, we find numerous factors are involved – GPU, processor, RAID, RAM, conflicts. It is not a straightforward problem/solution, but rather trial and error and the threads like this one help as well.

Lots of great info here. My biggest question on Mac vs. PC when it comes to Premiere is the codec architecture and how Premiere functions with that. Premiere does seem a bit slow and clunky on my newish 8-core MacPro, especially with dynamic linked AE files.

For example, my understanding is that quicktime is strictly 32-bit, and therefore 64-bit processes don’t work on Premiere at top speed if you’re using quicktime codecs.

We use ProRes 4444 for most of our stuff because it rocks and it can store alpha.

But Premiere doesn’t seem to love it, and CineForm and DNxHD are great, but the don’t play back stutterless at full rez and quality on my mac.

Anyway, we’ve moved to Premiere but don’t know how to fully optimize things and our next round of computer purchases MIGHT be PCs. I’d love to hear any thoughts on how to maximize a Premiere setup on either platform.

    THANKS!

    Tom
