July 17, 2011 at 1:37 amChris…
The Adobe engineers I’ve interacted with feel that the two platforms are roughly equal…each might have an edge over here…and might trail a little bit over there.
I think there are some Mac users that have felt their systems don’t run as smoothly as Windows (and there are a few who have a conflict of some sort that is not indicative of how Adobe typically runs on a Mac.)
I think if you are setting up a new system, most of the possible snares are already taken care of.
FCP users who may have more than one version of QT loaded up (by necessity) as well as lots of other software loaded and haven’t changed their driver configurations for years (the “holy grail” for an editor…the edit system just runs and runs and runs instead of constant updating, etc.)…I think the few of these guys who are running into issues probably have a system component or software issue that just hasn’t been run to ground yet.
If a mac is what you’d prefer to have, there is no official Adobe line on one running smoother or faster than the other…but do pay attention if you choose to comparison shop as how the processors are configured can be different (if you are looking at a Hyper-threading Windows machine, make sure the MacPro also Hyper-threads, etc.)

July 19, 2011 at 11:21 pmThe Mac and PC are both tools..pick the one that best fits the job.
I work on a mac at home but train on the PC often, and the software works the same on either platform.I would recommend an Nvidia card if you are going to do daily work in Premiere.

July 20, 2011 at 7:32 pm[Tom Daigon] “Yes its a shame that PrP users were treated with a lack of respect in the past. Is that a good reason for them to act in the same disrespectful manner to others? “
I hear what you’re saying Tom…long time Windows/PPro users need to have the will power to avoid the tempting opportunity to give in to schadenfraude…

July 20, 2011 at 8:07 pmMy Mac performs like a champ with the software I use. But its an early 2008 Mac Pro and Im not sure how the newer ones have changed. I am also to new to Premiere Pro to make any assumptions about which machine performs the best. I encourage you to do exhaustive research to find the best machine for the best price. I like not worrying about viruses but with care they can be avoided on the PC platform. A prominent PrP user posted this regarding getting the best bang for buck on the PC side. The way Apple is going these days, I would be a bit wary.

Chris, Im not sure an Imac is the best choice. Do a little more research and make sure its processing power, ability to interface with external raid systems and graphics card (supporting CUDA) will be able to do the job for you. It might be OK, but I know at time my 8 core Mac Pro is challenged with certain types of formats. 😉

October 1, 2011 at 11:28 pmI have a Mac Pro quad core with 16g Ram and the Quadro 4000 card running premiere 5.5. I have to say I am not happy with the performance. Stuttering issues etc. I get the impression that the older Mac Pros (3.1, I have the 4.1) run much better, even though the intel processors are not set up for HT ? So, I am thinking of heading over to windows, I stress “thinking”, or even buying a 2008 machine.

October 2, 2011 at 12:07 amI can understand how you feel, Apple is pretty much EOL with me and you are right, the contemporary Mac Pros seem to be generating lots of performance complaints. There are many folks at the Adobe Premiere Pro 5.5 forum that have been using PCs for years. You might find their guidance helpful.

October 2, 2011 at 12:14 amThanks Tom. Its all very frustrating. I have been with mac from pretty much the beginning, and it seems the like as a company they are throwing the pro user under the bus.

October 2, 2011 at 12:50 amChris, lots of folks have good things to say about this company.
They make custom PC systems for professional video and audio use. They are also regular participants in the forum at Adobe. You may want to call them to see what other options you might consider in the future. I did and they were very helpful.
