May 26, 2012 at 6:52 pmI have been monitoring this thread/topic with regard to CS5.5 and was hoping that CS6 would resolve the issue, but it hasn’t for me. I’m also a FCP7 -> PPro user, but so far I’m disappointed due to this issue.
My mac is a quad-core 2.26 GHz Xeon MacPro4,1 with 24GB ram and the original Nvidia GeForce GT 120 display running 10.6.8 with all the updates. I did do a fresh install from scratch recently onto a new HD. I am wondering if this an architecture problem related to this particular MacPro build. I have read that older machines don’t have the same problem. I wonder if newer MacPro machines work fine as well.
The problem is identical to the one described in the above video “Premiere Pro Lag Part 5”. The lagginess is a function of the relative size of the timeline panel.
I haven’t tackled a large project yet, so I don’t know if this gets worse with project complexity.
I’m seriously considering a PC.

May 26, 2012 at 9:31 pmBefore you buy the PC try upgrading to Lion. I talked to Wayne who participates on this and other forums about his problem being resolved. He was elated that after battling the lag for a long time, the upgrade to Lion cleared it right up. Something to consider.

May 26, 2012 at 9:55 pmI personally saw the ‘drag clips lag’ issue disappear with CS 5.5 and Mac 10.7 on my Mac Pro 3,1 which was supposedly immune to the issue (however I experienced that problem), I’m happy with that. Prior to that I was sizing my timeline to fill up a large part of my 30″ cinema display which also was a workaround, but using 10.7 is a much better solution.
As a side note, in general with more difficult codecs playing (AVCHD) on the timeline on separate tracks, the more laggy PPro gets on my system. You can see all the CPUs kick in on my aging 2008 Mac Pro when playing, and sometimes it just lags a bit on playback and scrubbing, example, press play and it takes a second to start. My workaround for this is to disable all the non-essential tracks while I’m doing extensive editing, then turn then on after most of the heavy editing is done.

May 28, 2012 at 9:09 pmThanks Keith for the confirmation that 10.7 helped this issue (the one shown in the video link in Evan’s comment) at least in your situation for your hardware/software configuration. The problem that Tom was referring to that Wayne described seems different than the problem described in this thread. The other lagginess described by Wayne seemed to be associated with playback and codecs.
Well I am apprehensive to upgrade to Lion after reading many of the comments on the OSX Lion App store page. There seem to be very mixed experiences with the 10.7.4 upgrade; some fine and some disastrous. Even with a Timemachine backup, I will make a clone of my current Snow Leopard installation before I embark on the upgrade. That way if I have a disaster, I’ll be able to very easily get back to where I am now. I have a very large project coming up and if I have to, I can still use FCP7 with Snow Leopard. -> (while I transition back to PC) 😛

May 28, 2012 at 9:46 pmActually Stuart, I saw a video that Wayne posted at another site, and it was the lag associated with dragging a clip around the timeline. Not the Lag in playback. Hard to keep all the lags straight. 😀

May 28, 2012 at 11:20 pmOK thanks Tom.
So I took the plunge and upgraded to Lion. Fortunately everything went smoothly. And YES it did fix the lag issue. Now to get as familiar with PP as I am with FCP.
Now I guess I’ll have to upgrade Microsoft Office!
