    Thanks for the response – I feel I need to spend more time with it to give a real answer. I’m sure there’s a LOT of user error happening right now. But I do feel the program is more engineer based and not Editor based – meaning it’s not a user-friendly app. Perfect example is getting playback on a second monitor – I have to plug in specific formula? This should simple just like in Premiere…

    I found this to be a big issue. You need to get a comprehensive PDF for the Adobe versus up fast. I’m finding the old OnSet and NX PDFs way more helpful than the videos at Adobe. They are good introductions, but something more in-depth would be welcome, like a real user guide (manual).

    In playing with it the past couple of days, I find that it’s very easy to miss a lot of the power. There is no top menu bar and few internal menus. More icons, tabs and nothing contextual, like right mouse-click functions. As a result, I think a lot of folks are going to look at it, not understand it and move on, which would be a shame.

    Comparing SG to Color to Resolve…. SG is missing curves, user-drawn shape masks, tracking and an effects node tree (like Color). That being said, in the hands of just about anyone moderately familiar with how grading systems tend to work, they will find that there are very few grading challenges that can’t be done in SG.

    Some SG plusses over the others – better UI design for actual grading. Multiple viewers for comparing and matching shots. Fast application of grades from one clip to the next. Photoshop-style grading layers per clip and for parts or all of an entire track. Grading controls break out four groups: shadows, mids, highs, overall, plus things like color temp and tint controls.

    Whoops, should clear up a misconception here. I had heard that SpeedGrade, by default, rendered your entire project out to a single, sequence-long file. Not true. Outputs each graded clip separately, regardless of the metadata you choose to include in the file/path names.

    Also, Oliver, there are indeed custom masks and tracking in SpeedGrade. There’s an “add point” button in the Mask tab. You add your points, and then can select and convert to Bezier control points. Not as intuitive as, say, a Pen Tool, but it is there.

    We’re straying a little far off topic. When does the SpeedGrade forum open?

    SG has shape tracking and it’s layer based so I don’t think it’s missing nodes.

    While I agree that the setting for dual monitors is a bit quirky, I don’t think that this is a good example of SpeedGrade’s general UI.

    Most people, once they invested an hour or so, find the UI for grading intuitive. If you are familiar with Photoshop, the layer based approach should be very easy to grasp.

    I do agree that the documentation at this time is basic. That’s what you get, when you come late to the party.

    I think you misunderstood my comment. When I said “node” in my post I was talking about node-tree compositing using Color’s ColorFX room. This applies filters as a series of nodes. This is not nodes, like Resolve calls them, where they are using the term to refer to secondaries and masks.

    Color has (had) a unique API for 3rd-party filter plug-ins. I don’t believe any other color correction system has that, except Scratch, Lustre or Pablo. Certainly not Resolve or SpeedGrade.
