Power Mac G5 Quad – for advanced video editing

Mike, I am not arguing about PCs vs. Mac, OSX vs XP, Final Cut vs. other NLEs. I am a final cut editor and I love final cut as well. I am not advising a switch to PC. I am merely saying an Intel Mac, though its not out yet, will be faster than current quad g5s. Apple will not release a product that is slower than its current machines. I am not saying Intel is better than AMD, AMD has nothing to do with this. My point is the processing power of a quad Pentium or Operteron, of which there are currently many systems available, and will soon be avialable on a Mac, will be faster than a Quad G5. That is all.

With that kind of reasoning you should never buy a computer. Since there will always be something faster!
This topic is about if the Power Mac G5 Quad is a good choice. Maybe you need to read the post again!!!

Obviously you can wait forever and eveything will always get outdated, but this is a major change in the apple world and I think it will be interesting to see what they come out.
I was merely saying that if he can wait, it may be worth a shot and that i understood that if he needed it immediately he should get it as its a great machine.
My arguement was with your statement “a Quad won’t be outdated. There is nothing on hte PC-side right now that match it.” Sorry to the person who started this post for holding an argument when you are just looking for a simple answer to your question.

You’ll be waiting a long time. Apple has practically drawn a road map showing when and where each product will be announced and released. The new PowerMac towers will 99% be announced at the WWDC which has been moved ot August no doubt to make a little more time for the Powermacs. They’ll probably be available in limited supply a month after that, and greater supply throughout what’s left of the year.
All research I’ve seen demonstrates that a dual duo will be faster, but even by Apple’s current specs and claims, not by much. So, most likely it will be the next incarnation of intel processor, which I believe Intel has spec’d to come out before the end of this year.

Isn’t the duo a mobile processor only, wouldn’t something like a pentium extreme or an opteron be used in the desktop line?

iMacs run duo’s, wouldn’t call them mobile.
Before that they ran G5’s.Doubt you will see a AMD in a Mac either… they’re working with intel…
I’ve seen some benchmark tests between the duo iMac and the G5 iMac and still the G5 iMac was faster in alot of tasks. -
The G5 would only be faster in the older, non-universal apps. If the apps aren’t universal (written for the pentium) then they’re using Rosetta – an emulation to run on the pentium. Slowing them down to roughly 25% speed (of the pentium) which is still slower than the native G5 speed of course.
I’ve yet to see specs say anything but speed on universal apps. Never seen one score slower! Especially since a duo is the equivalent of 2 g5s or faster.

Nothing will be released in that short of time. Intel’s Conroe doesn’t have a ship date until 2nd half 2006. Even if it is announced, programs ohr than Apple’s may not run effectively on it. I’m thinking of After Effects specifically.
Quad is a good choice. Get the 7800 video card and you won’t have much to worry about for the next few years.
