  • posts are discouraging – upgrade from V4 to V5 or V4 to V6?

Posted by Erik Gingles on April 21, 2005 at 9:35 pm

I have V4 and the only real thing I’d like to use is the 3D manipulation in the pan and crop. It seems like I should upgrad to V6 with the few added benefits, but after having read several posts, it seems like V6 would be more of a headache than anything else.

Any comments or is it too early to tell?

    Erik.

I would not be afraid to upgrade to Vegas 6. I has a ton of features over Vegas 4. Remember that you can have both Vegas 4 AND Vegas 6 installed. Also remember to upgrade DVD Architect. Version 3 of DVDA has so many features over DVDA 1 that you won’t believe it’s the same program.

So far Vegas 6 has been working real well for me – it’s worth it just for the HDV stuff.

Vegas 6.0 is very buggy–even the people at Sony admit it—I suggest you by the update but don’t use it until they release 6.0b.

Nancy, I will agree that 6.0 is very buggy. Version 6.0a, however, has been running fine on my system so it can’t be said that it’s “not stable” on all systems. Yes, some people are having problems. However, many others are not. Do I think it’s bug-free – absolutely NOT. Do I think it can get some work done – YES. Do I think 6.0b will be better – YES.

Stability is the key for me at this point. When always racing deadlines crashes are most unwelcomed. Nancy has a good point to buy it and then hold for the next update if things go awry during trial runs. Any information on how well the dual processing works?

As one of the people who is experiencing no end of problems with v6.0a build 99 (the latest) I can only say *stay the hell away* (at least for now).

How much is $50 to you? That’s all you’ll save by buying now and holding on to it until it becomes stable (if).

I was shocked that the upgrade price from v4 to v6+dvda3 was only $50 higher than from v5+dvda2. I upgraded to v5 right off the bat to get the dicounted price. I was hoping to hold on to it until they released the decklink drivers. Low and behold, we didn’t see those until a whole new revision and more $$$$! And they still don’t really work. Will it be v7 before they do? Another version and yet *another* $200 of my money?

It depends on what you’ll use. I never ended up using any of v5’s new features, but at least v5 was pretty stable (for me at least). I can’t say the same for v6.

Buy it for a $50 discount now and maybe use it later? I used to think like that. Now I think I’ll wait it out until the AAF and Decklink issues sort themselves out.

Jet–we agree—as I said in my earlier post, I would buy 6.0 today because of the upgrade price. By the way, you mention 6.0A–I downloaded mine on Monday-has 6.0A been released since then.

If you think that 5.0 is stable, you should try 4.0–Ah the good old days when Sonic Foundry made the software and didn’t have the Goliath Sony breathing down their necks.

6.0a was the initial web release. 6.0 was never available for download (but the initial run of CDs will contain 6.0). Go to help – about and you should see Vegas 6.0a (build 99).

Would you suggest sticking to V4 until it’s sorted out? At this point, deck link is not something I would use.
