They might have used proprietary software, but Twixtor might do it if you have enough frames to start with. Since the object is changing shape as it rotates, not just passing across the frame, it’s a bit tougher.

By the way, it’s a dated effect, possibly a lot of work just to elecit groans from an audience. 🙂
