  • Plugins cannot be opened by Final Cut in the ”Motion Title” format any more

Posted by Daniel Nauroth on April 3, 2024 at 6:39 pm

    Hello Creative Cow members,

All of a sudden, my plugins in the Motion Title format do not open by FCP anymore.
They are still in the browser, they just won’t open.

The plugin effects still work, just the plugins in the title folder don’t.

When using the finder to open the plugins
Final Cut delivers a warning and says:

The document could not be opened.
Final Cut cannot open files in the ‘Motion Title’ format.

This only goes for files with the ending: .moti

When looking at the Movies and Motion Titles folder, all the plugins are still there.
Reinstalling did not make it work either.

All of my plugins within the Motion Titles folder are affected.

Even Apple’s own Essential & Objects (Generators) won’t open anymore.

All other Apple titles still work though.

Could you please let me know, how to make FCP open the Plugins within the Motion Title format again?

    Thanks a lot!
    Regards
    Dan

    Do you have motion installed?

    Yep, motion is installed.

What do you mean they won’t open? Can you apply them to a Project timeline?

As for the templates themselves, in the Motion Templates folder, they don’t open into FCPX, they only open into Motion.

Can you give us specific templates, and exactly what is happening, step by step?

    Thanks for your reply:
I’ve bought plugins from Ripple Training, Motion VFX and Pixel Film Studios.
    Then I installed them.

All of them were working just fine for many months.

From one day to another, all plugins in the FCP titles won’t open when I click them.
So I cannot apply them to a project timeline anymore.

The plugins still show up in the title browser, but when I click them nothing is displayed and nothing happens anymore

I am not talking about templates, but plugins like mTitle Boost (Typography Layouts) or
    FCPX 3D Indicators.

When adding an adjustment layer that lives in custom titles,
    I cannot open it either.
Even though it’s in the finder and movies folder.

    Final cut says:
The document could not be opened.

Final Cut cannot open files in the ‘Motion Title’ format.

Titles are stored in Movies Folder – Motion Templates Folder – Titles
All other plugins in the Motion Templates Folder still open and can be applied to the timeline when using Final Cut Pro.
Only the plugins in the title folder are affected.

    Thanks
    Dan

Not sure what you mean by “open” them. You don’t open them, you apply them to the Timeline, then use the Inspector to make adjustments. No, FCPX can not “open” a Motion project file. But it can use it in the timeline. So I’m confused, no clue what you’re trying to say.

    Thanks for your answer, Ben.
    I cannot apply them anymore.
If I click them, nothing happens.
I do not get to see the plugins.
That’s what I mean when saying open.
I just say ”open”, because this is what Final Cut is saying, when I click the plugin in the finder/movies folder.

    O.K.
I was just saying what FCP was telling me.
Let me put it that way.
I cannot use all of my plugins living in the titles file anymore.

No matter what brand the plugins are from.

The plugins are still there, and they are still in the titles browser, but when I click them in order to apply them, they do not show.
Even though they are all in the titles folder.

So, even though the plugins are still there, Final Cut won’t apply them anymore when I click them.

OK, you select a title in the browser.

You use the keyboard shortcut “E” or “Q” to apply them to the timeline.

And you say they to not get applied to the timeline?

Simply clicking. a template/plugin in the browser does nothing by itself.

Can you do a demo video or screen shot to show us what’s happening?

Are they showing a missing template/plugin warning symbol?

Standard troubleshooting is to first delete the pref files. Launch FCPX while also holding down the command and option keys together. When prompted, delete the preference files. It is totally safe to do. Then select the Library in your browser inside FCPX, go to the File menu, and select the “Delete All Generated…” option. There you’re deleting ALL render files. Totally safe procedure.

    Thanks Ben,
I cannot select any plugin titles in the browser.
Therefore using E or Q to apply them won’t work

When clicking the plugin titles in the titles browser, the Installed Titles section remains empty.
    The titles do not show.
FCP does no say they are missing either when clicking them.
