December 18, 2005 at 12:27 amThe Varicam started life as an NTSC camera only but was adapted to shoot with PAL standards in mind. How can this camera allow for full 60 frame capture for slow motion replay and full 24fps support in PAL, and the new technology cannot?
Now for a mini rant.
Some of the ideas put forward in these threads about the PAL market getting the rough end of the stick in product development are ringing loud and true. I would like to see products that are designed for use in my marketplace and not reverse engineered from NTSC products. Things such as NDF switches on broadcast recorders have no place in the PAL environment and tell me loud and clear that development for my use in my marketplace is low on the radar. Lack of development for PAL firewire support for HD100 and hence an FCP FRC plugin is the thick black underline beneath my thoughts on this at the moment.
Graeme, what is the RED camera you have mentioned here?

December 18, 2005 at 12:40 amhttp://www.red.com – preliminary website, with a rough outline of concept etc. It sounds like it will be super expensive, but the idea is to make it “affordable”, and that you’d be happy when you hear the price. However, no details yet as they don’t want to say something then dissapoint. They’ll have something (probably not a finished camera) to show at NAB. Some of the specs are riddled with humour, like the chip being called “mysterium” as that’s top secret and they don’t want to reveal their chip source etc, but the basic concept is there. Jim Jannard, president of Oakley is behind Red. He’s a complete camera nut, and owns more cameras than most people have ever seen, never mind used. I can assure you that, contrary to rumour, this is not some kind of joke, and is a real product in development now. HDforIndies.com has more info too for you to read.

We do have a Boris FX forum here at the cow… it includes questions about Red — unless you’re talking about some other Red.

Thanks for requesting a new forum around this camera (to be).
I’m getting the HVX-200, but very interested in the future development and release of this mysterious camera.

December 18, 2005 at 6:19 pmThanks. From what I understand, Red want a lot of feedback and ideas for the camera. They know that the very best ideas will come from people out there in the field so to speak, not necessarily in internal R&D labs. That’s why they’ve gone out to the internet like this. Jim is posting on CML, DVinfo, DVXuser to elicit response from professionals. That’s why the Creative Cow should have a forum for the Red camera!
