“I guess I could always keep the QT reference files on the working drive – just in another folder besides the raw files. ”

Exactly what I do. Here’s my “template folder” structure that gets copied on every new project startup:

    3D
    AFX
    Art
    Audio
    client review
    Consolidated Project
    Do Not Archive
    DVD
    encodes
    FCP project
    Motion
    MXFs
    QT refs
    Raylight QTs
    Reference
    renders
    SFX
    Stills
    Stock
    TEMP
    Text

Then I use DiskTracker to database the archives when theings go offline.

    Good idea, Bob!

But in your list of folders, how do these 3 differ:

    QT refs
    Raylight QTs
    Reference

Are they all reference files from Raylight?

    Thanks,

    Bill

Are they all reference files from Raylight?

    Nope;

QT refs = “output” QT ref files from FCP, etc, for input to Compressor, etc
Raylight QTs = these are the Raylights (they get archived with the project)
Reference = files from client that I might need to refer to (eg, brand guidelines)

    Jeremy,

I am a very not technical writer/producer type. Just shot for six days using P2 card and P2 contents management software. I have a mac. And we added some redundancy by transfering each days footage to three external harddrives. I have one of them. Everything seems to work fine. I can click on the thumbnails and watch the clips. But is there a way to name the clips and to note what is on them? each clip has now been (what seems like) randomly assigned a number. It is making scriptwriting a very slow process. Any suggestions?

    [John Stanton] “Any suggestions?”

Are you using P2CMS to log the clips? If so you will need a component that will then send the pertinent information over to FCP. I like and use MXF4mac for this. This way, you can have all of your MXF files logged no matter what system you put them on, but every system must have MXF4mac.

If you don’t want to log the actual MXF files and want to rewrap the MXF to Quicktime (and then create new media) simply go to File > Log and Transfer from FCP. This will bring up a window and then you add your P2 cards to that window, then you can type in whatever clip names you want and then add it to the queue. This will create Quicktime Movies that will now be named whatever you chose.

Shane has a good tutorial on that process here:

I have an MXF4mac tutorial here:
