Outputing Vegas to HD Monitor

If I had my choice, I’d always go for a card and a studio monitor. Especially if you will want to do colour correction at any time.

This is really a matter of what you can afford. Both options work. The BlackMagic card is good for more than just output so if you also need capture capability, I would go for the BM and a good monitor. That has the added advantage of using 3 monitors, 2 for windows and one for video preview if I’m not mistaken.

So Tom, you have BOTH dual computer monitors you are using for Vegas AND and external HD studio monitor via BM card? Which card again? And this gives you the best playback representation from the Vegas timeline?

Before I make that move, my Dell U2410 monitor has a bunch of setting as well as the GTX470 card. Any insight as to what display settings I should be using in WIN 64-bit?

Correct Ken…

I have the nVidia GEForce 9800GT card – dual DVI out to two ViewSonic monitors.

Also, the BM Decklink Studio 2 card – HDMI out to an LED-LCD TV. The BM card has all outputs always active so at the same time I have an SD monitor showing the HD stream downconverted and letterboxed.

If you are going to use the Windows Secondary Monitor, you need to buy a hardware calibrator like the Datacolor Spyder 3. You will never be able to calibrate as good with your eyes and the Spyder 3 is a lot quicker. Just use it once a month (it will remind you) and you’re good to go. There are other devices like the Pantone Huey but I’ve never used one. I have the Spyder 3 Eliete.

Nice setup, Tom. I could always use the extra screen real estate….. but I’d have to really get creative since I’m really cramped for studio space. But I like the idea of the BM card.
