Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy OT: DVD duplicators worth considering

Wayne, I meant that on a text only basic print on a white cd or dvd, the ink from a primera signature iv, turns orange on the outside of the black letters after a few months and looks tacky.

The printer that Walter is talking about and the one I have (same model) uses HP ink carts and does not have the problem.

I paid 5,000 new for my SA4 duplicator 3 years ago.
It paid for itself in 3 months.

I paid 1,000 for an older SA4 (slightly different in design)
that had a bad robot arm (would not pick up discs) and replaced it for $ 200 and 1 hr of my time. It has paid for itself within the first 2 weeks.

Bottom line is, these are great for running during the day and checking them every so often to make sure they keep going.

Most days they run without a hitch and most nights too. I’m just saying that you can’t trust them to run reliably 100% of the time because thats not reality.

I’ve also been basically sharing every issue I ever had with the unit. Dupers have issues, they are not expensive enough to not have issues. Even my first Primera Cedar 2 CD duper would time out on the robot pickup sometimes or pickup discs and drop them.

For 5,000 it is worth the small issue, because I HAVE the quality control and scheduling internally and not relying on a third party.

If small run duplication (1-500) was not a big earner for me I would defer to another place, but I make a pretty hefty sum on the side each year, so I’ll just go with the flow….:)

    I hear you…

You are very correct when you say that duplicators aren’t 100% reliable. But can you point out any computer or computer device that is…?

Considering all the issues that are listed out here on the net, I would have to say that Primera has the least amount of issues. Now, I will say that I would ONLY run a duplicator on PC since that is were the software is designed. They do run a Mac but not very well. Just use a cheap PC with an incredibly large hard drive for your disc images and everything will run pretty well.

Sorry, Chris, when I was talking about the colors… I wasn’t referring to your situation. I’ve just heard others say that Primera printers will get the colors wrong from time to time. I have yet to see any of that – but when working with Photoshop, if your monitor is not properly calibrated for the printer – prints will always be wrong. This is true for ALL printers and Photoshop.

As for your issue you had, Chris. Couldn’t just select in the printer driver to print B&W only? I’m not familiar with this duplicator but I can with the Primera dups.

Wayne, that signature iv printer used a single composite cartridge for both color and black, so blacks were not quite as deep as could be.

Both my SA4 duplicators have pc’s running xp inside them.

They are reliable, just can’t be trusted to run overnight without a possible hitch.
There is a 50/50 chance coming in the next day if the entire 200 disc run
is complete, or if it only did 4 discs after I left, then hung up.

I never make a promise to a client that would depend on the duplicator
getting a run of 200 done overnight. I would have to factor at least one
    work day just in case.

There is 1 duplicator I’ve mentioned that is apparently bullet proof reliable.
It never hangs, has 350 disc capacity and also prints. It costs 35,000 dollars though.
I’d rather have a little less reliability than spend 30,000 more.

    No kidding….

I know what you are talking about. I’ve learned that with the Primera duplicators, if you just tip it forward little bit, the discs come out better and it hangs up less. Primera printers have a tendency to drop the discs and they will slide back into the DVD recorders instead of coming down the ejection chute to the disc hopper, so tilting the machine forward just a little makes it better to eject discs.

Ouch… that sucks… But they had to start somewhere. Its kinda like those cheap Wal-Mart Lexmark printers.
