There is a difference between resolution and desktop real estate. The retina displayed be good for evaluating the sharpness of the video in the player window. However as far as user interface it doesn’t help much. First because it’s difficult to have that fine of control with a mouse or trackpad and second because interpreting icons and text is different than evaluating an image. There is a reason magazines don’t print in 6 point type even though it is perfectly legible.
