June 7, 2005 at 12:27 pm[Ron Lindeboom] “n one move, Apple has made itself into a company — the only one that I can think of — that will be making machines which can run both the Mac OS and Windows (not to forget even Linux, if you wish) in a single box. Not emulation, full OS system software.”
Hi Ron,
I don’t see this happening.
I don’t think that just because there’s an Intel Chip in the machine, they will make it possible.
Just like you won’t be able to run XBOX 360 games on a Powermac G5 (OK, bad example 😉 )Apple will want to differentiate their products, perhaps with some kind of motherboard innovation. The hype is: they want to make great products, and they can’t do that with IBM’s processor roadmap.
Noone will see it as progress if they start building the same computer as say, Dell with an apple-logo smacked on it.So, it’s prob. technically very feasible, but Jobs will ‘forget’ to enable that feature.
He’ll have too much egg on his face if he’s going to say:
“oh BTW, now you can run Longhorn on your mac too, isn’t that a nifty thing ?”

June 7, 2005 at 12:35 pmHi Filip,
Apple yesterday said that while they do not and will not ship Macs with Windows (and will not be selling it at the Apple store), their new machines will run Windows and they plan to do absolutely nothing to preclude users from doing so.
There is no way in hell that Apple is simply going to build a Gate(s)way or a Dell and slap an Apple sticker on it.
If you watch the keynote from yesterday’s WWDC, you will see that Apple has not just started this in the last few months, they’ve been at this for years. It was not a decision made without great thought and preparation. To quote The Electric Flag: It’s been “A Long Time Comin'”
Best regards,
Ron Lindeboom

June 7, 2005 at 12:48 pmYup,
it was Phil Schillinger, Apple Senior Vice President, who made that comment and he also said “We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac”
This from Cnet, news.com
cheers

June 7, 2005 at 2:37 pmI just reread this entire thread and in the rereading of it, my reply to you came off as a slap at you. It was NOT intended as that and I apologize if it comes off that way. I am just a passionate guy with strong opinions and I do not want the appearance of even remotely insulting you.
Best always,
Ron Lindeboom

June 7, 2005 at 3:34 pmJust re-read my original post there. Mmmm, maybe a smidge of hyperbole going on… Thats a nice point there, one mac box rebooting into native windows for Max (always made me hesitate to fork out for a mac of my own Max did), with a firewire drive hanging off for shared storage (they won’t be able to see each other’s stuff to the same drive will they?) Thats actually the bit tempting..
God, what do apple do to designers? I’m supposed to be louche and distanced, not some freaked out mac fan. Sigh.A

June 7, 2005 at 6:01 pmIt’s far too new in the news to have any real definitive statements at this point. It’s pretty commonplace knowledge to assume that it will support USB-2 and IEEE-1394 (Firewire), and so it is likely that you will be able to reach across to other platform’s files — but that remains to be seen.

😎
No offence taken, RonYou guys had information I didn’t know of, I had just seen the Keynote and the press-releases.
I think what Phil Shiller said is a surprise because of the longhorn and windows bashing that’s been going on for the last half year at very public events.
Making the machine boot to windows seemed to me as >:-I “highly illogical, Jim”
