New Multibridge combines Decklink HD Pro 4:4:4 and HD Link?
Posted by Emery on April 18, 2005 at 6:35 pmIt seems like the new Multibridge combines the functionality of these two products, and it works out to be about a $100 cheaper (atleast when compared to the Multibridge Extreme model)
Is there anything the two seperate products offer that multibridge does not? It doesnt look like it, they run the same drivers. I wonder how the HDLink software (Look Up tables and such) are implemented into the Dual Link DVI output of the multibridge? Any ideas?
Still its a fairly exciting release, and it takes it a step above the kona 2 in terms of the “all in one” capture, playback, converter device.

April 18, 2005 at 6:55 pmDid you include the cost of the Blackmagic PCI Express Bridge card to allow the Multibridge Extreme to connect to PCI-X 133 MHz. G5 systems? I can’t find a price for the adapter.
Looks like I will be saving up for this system, Final Cut Studio, and the new Panasonic P2 AG-HVX200! I wonder how much that will cost me? ~$15k? -

April 19, 2005 at 2:16 amHi Emery,
I’ll try to find out the cost of the bridge card from the Blackmagic team at NAB 2005 when they ring the office. I’m not sure if the price had been worked out as it is very new and happened just before the show. I’m sure Grant will make the price attractive, even though there’s a lot of components on the card, as the whole idea is to make low cost products. Hopefully G5’s will have PCIe in the future and in which case the bridge card would become obsolete. You can see the card at https://www.blackmagic-design.net/products/multibridge/ under the heading “Apple Mac G5 PCI-X Compatibility”. Don’t look too hard as I just found another grammatical error 😉
In regards to the feature sets, you can check out the specs for the Multibridges with and without PCIe. I think there are some differences in the analog audio options which may or may not be relevant to you. The two specs pages are at:

April 19, 2005 at 3:59 amIf you need do a side-by-side spec comparison, here are the links..
For the Extreme and Studio versions …

April 19, 2005 at 4:02 amIf you get the new Multibridge please note that the spec page says ..
Black Burst or Try-Sync input
So, like the HDPlus and HDPro cards, these systems too “try” to sync, or do they actually?
Shoulda posted this separately, but my HDPlus and HDPro are still off house sync. The “blink with sync” issue continues.Neil

Something weird seems to have happened to the URL that I posted so that the last part of the URL is not active. Thanks for posting the correct links.

April 19, 2005 at 5:11 amHi Neil,
That is hilarious and embarrassing. I’ve clearly missed some references to “Try Sync” which should have been “TriSync”. I’ll fix that shortly and thanks for bringing it to my attention.
TriSync traditionally relates to high definition so it is essentially the HD version of genlock. I’m sorry that you’ve been waiting on a solution to your sync problem. I checked with the engineers and it’s on the list to be looked at ASAP and I hope we have some progress shortly after NAB. Unfortunatley the problem with the original Multibridge chips has consumed a lot of time which we would ordinarily have allocated to investigating and resolving issues such as the sync issue. We will get to it as soon as we can.

April 19, 2005 at 2:08 pmSo Luke…
Are the original Multibridges actually shipping to customers? I was told by BMD and my dealer only a week and a half ago they were again on “indefinite engineering hold” and not to expect it for many weeks, or even months. So what’s the deal – are you standing next to a FedEx guy whipping these things out or shall I expect to wait longer?
