[Nick Toth] “Simon – how difficult is it to convert these to 1080i 29.97? I was using your 3-Way Assymetrical with a talking head and the video played back slow.”

How did you get the video into the Drop Zones? I think there is an issue with frame rate if you pick the clips off the timeline as I know I suggested following a recommendation from Alex Gollner. It seems to me that if you get your clips from the Browser it doesn’t affect the frame rate, but that has obvious limitations in that your source clip will only play from the head and will ignore your in/out points.

To be honest I would recommend using the new Frame Effect (above) to get round this problem. Since you are not reliant on Drop Zones the whole thing works far better I think.

I did try changing the frame rate of the Motion project and there were still major issues. I’ll give it a go now for you anyway with a Motion project set to 29.97 and see if it works for you.

I guess you’re right. The new frame effect is probably more flexible. I think you’re right about taking the footage from the browser versus the timeline because I did a quick test that seemed to work OK and I think that was the difference.

    Hi Nick

Try this version which I have recreated as 1080 29.97. I have a bad feeling the frame rate might still mess up as I reckon there’s an issue with Drop Zones as I mentioned.

I’d be very interested to hear how you get on … Thanks.

[Eli Hollander] “Robbert-Jan van der Does’s “Multi-Gradient Blur” filter, at the top of this forum, has nice on-screen controls for the blur control… works beautifully.”

I’ll check out what he’s done, thanks. Could be another interesting challenge to do some proper onscreen controls for this as well 😉

Hmmmmm, yes – the problem is that you can very easily assign onscreen controls for filters (here he’s just published the built-in onscreen controls for ramping the gradient) but it’s much trickier to make them work for things like scaling and position.

In fact, you’d be amazed at how complex the FCPX Mask effect is in order to give you control just over the position of the four corners of the mask … but I’ll get there one way or another 😉

Simon – thanks for taking the time to put that together. It starts out OK but the video slows over a 10 second interval to where it goes more and more out of sync. I’ll try it to get the same effect with the Adjustable Frame. I’ll let you know how that goes.

    Hi Nick

Thanks for getting back to me – that confirms what I thought, which is that there are some serious issues with Drop Zones and playback rates.

Which is a shame because they could be so useful if they worked right.

All in all I’m not sure they are an improvement on Drop Zones in FCP 7 – which were very, very basic to say the least!

Great for stills – useless (currenntly) for video!

I wish they would make it easier to be able to publish the onscreen controls for transforms etc.

Because at the moment, one of the ways is taking a filter that has a centre point control, such as light rays and pinch and then using a link parameter to to drive the x position of layer using the x position of the filter. Same again for the y. Not ideal….but hey it works.

Must get back to some real work 😉

    Cheers,

    Brendan

Whoa!!!!! Don’t go away, you’re just the man I need. You of all people would be able to think of a way to enable OSCs to drive transform properties.

I’m hitting my head agaisnt a brick wall right now!

Using the Adjustable Frame is definitely more fiddly than using the drop zones but the results are worth it. Hope they get the issue with the drop zones straightened out. There’s some great potential there. Thanks!
