I just want to hear from someone who has beat the hell out of the thing to tell me that it’s stable.

“jaw-dropping” new interface, all new 64 bit under the hood = a lot of potential stability issues given Apple’s notoriously tiny beta program. A couple dozen editors working in very tightly controlled situations really doesn’t tell us what’s going to happen when the app is released to 1 million+ registered users with hundreds, if not thousands, of configurations.

New features are nice. Stability is paramount.

I just overheard two guys in a restaurant, one saying to the other “Do you know that Apple’s just booked space for next month so that they can make some big announcement in London at the same time as they make it in California”…

Am I the only one who really doesn’t care whether my kit is exciting or not, I just want it to sit there and work quickly, smoothly and above all reliably so that I can basically ignore it while I get on with thinking about the pictures and sound?

    >want to hear from someone who has beat the hell out of the thing to tell me that it’s stable

Then I think you need to hold fire a little longer man, if this is only just in the “being shown to a select few” stage then logic suggests that its still in alpha, pre-beta.

    >given Apple’s notoriously tiny beta program

I believe your understanding of the FCS beta program may be out of date.

    >couple dozen editors working in very tightly controlled situations

From a software development point, again that would better describe the alpha stage.

    Just my 2c

[Andy Mees] “Then I think you need to hold fire a little longer man, if this is only just in the “being shown to a select few” stage then logic suggests that its still in alpha, pre-beta.”

Oh no, it’s been beta for some time now.

[Andy Mees] “From a software development point, again that would better describe the alpha stage.”

No, that actually describes Apple’s beta program. At one time (I think FCP 6 or maybe 5) literally 10 people were in the beta program. I think for FCP 7 they might have had 100 just before the final release, but prior to that it was something like 20 to 50.

Apple has miniscule beta programs when it comes to ProApps which is why the .0 release is usually the buggiest when it comes out. When thousands suddenly get their hands on it, then the myriad of problems really shows up.

Having followed the rumor sites and read this thread I cant help but be excited!

However, having recently invested A LOT of money in a new system I cant help but wonder how LightPeak will effect me. In November I purchased a 12-core and added 32GB of RAM / Internal 8TB RAID 0 (OWC) and now while I am excited for the future I am also a little concerned.

With BMD video card, GTX285, Dreamcolor / HDlink, etc I invested roughly 10k into a home setup for learning & home based work but now it seems I might be behind the times in 6 months or less.

How soon before I will need to Crauglist the beast I built for a new Light Peak MacPro?! Advice anyone?

Any thoughts on this and the future.
    cheers

    Hey Sean
Don’t fret man. This is a fact of life with modern computing. Whatever you buy is pretty much out of date before you get it out of the box. Just try to remember that the top notch machine you just bought didn’t suddenly get any less capable because of this announcement. Use it, make some money practicing your craft, it will serve you very well indeed.
    Cheers

    Walter

I’d have to agree that “a couple dozen editors working in very tightly controlled situations” would be inadequate, but if (as you now suggest may be the case) they later seed the apps to as much as a hundred real world beta sites/installations, for testing prior to release, then that would actually seem to be pretty fair and hardly “notoriously tiny” or as “minuscule” as you’re insisting. This whining is beneath you man, all point-oh releases are a bit buggy, thats why we let the canon fodder go first 🙂

Walter – you do this every time a new FCS rumor pops up :). Nobody wants an unstable system – can’t we just dream of what could be without the Debbie Downer? There will be enough warnings when it’s actually released. Right now, let’s just revel in the hopes of what could be vs what will probably be.

I’m in the same boat my man. I have a feeling there will be a Thunderbolt PCI card eventually – specifically because they’re saying one isn’t available right now. Have faith – we still have the fastest macs on the planet!
