September 9, 2005 at 7:01 pmWait a second.
It’s OK. I bought the LA, like two weeks ago and it is the perfect companion for the KONA 2
The LH does not have all of teh features of KONA 2 and what was I supposed to edit with while I waited for the new products. I have an Aurora Pipe Studio card too. They did a great thing. They offered to buyback old hardware (4year old hardware) to keep you in theor product line.
I thought that was a nice thing to do. It worked out to about a 500.00 savings for the product. Not may m,anufactureers do that, but it’s a competitive business out here.
I think you have made a sound investment and probably will make it back many times over before it is completley useless.
It still works and your rate is still the same. Sure 1K in your jeans is always better, but it’s hard to complain. If you got stuck in an AVID ten years ago you had a reason to pull your hair out. This is chicken change compared to that.

September 9, 2005 at 7:23 pmThe one feature the LH has is the HD analog input. For me that is winner because the HD converter I was looking at cost almost as much as this card.

After giving the press release a closer read I see:
“For Standard Definition work, the Analog inputs and outputs can be configured as 12-bit SD
Component/YC/Composite, all via three professional BNC connectors. For SD and HD Digital I/O, KONA
LH offers SDI/HD-SDI input, and two SDI/HD-SDI outputs. Broadcast-grade Genlock is also included.”So YC is included, it probably just needs to be software configured to use two of the BNC connectors.

September 10, 2005 at 2:20 amCould have been worse…we bought an Avid Merridian Express right before the NAB they introduced the Adrenaline series….our $25k investment within just a few months immediately depreciated to less than 1/3rd it’s original cost. . . just one more year though and it’s paid off ..lol. Did we and do we make money with it? of course….was it what we needed at the time?…yes…does it suck that something newer and better was soon available at similiar or lower cost?….yep!

Actually it’s a special cable that has S-Video on one end and two BNC Connectors on the other. I had to do this with my old CineWave system as the Pro D&A BOB did not have S-Video as a port, I had to order a cable from ProMax to make it work. I probably still have them around here somewhere.
If it’s like the other Kona products, you’ll just select Y/C as the input in the control panel.

What should I say? I bought KONA 2 just two weeks back and received AJA HD10a converter just now… so I payed 3000 US or more for functionality AJA is selling now for 1700 …
But am I pissed? no. Just one job this week payed for KONA 2 and much more. This dillema is as old as computers… there will always be faster and better model in few months. Just buy what you need and when you need it.

AJA has a 30 day return policy, you may want to look into it if it is a real issue for you.

Honestly, no. I was just making the point of NOT being pissed off 😉
KONA 2 was literally working great 1 hour after UPS man arrived, within the week I had one documentary edited, client impressed and everyone happy. KONA 2 is obviously mature product, drivers had several updates… not sure I’d jump on brand new card just because I’d save 1000 US …

September 10, 2005 at 10:51 am30-day return policy? Since I bought the Kona 2 and Kbox only a week ago (with audio defects no less), I’m going to see this through. I needed the downconvert to deliver a rough cut to the client, and Kona 2 was the only solution at the time (besides Decklink). Had I known about LH, I would have waited. I’d gladly choose the analog I/O and $avings of LH over the upconvert and 4:4:4 of Kona 2. But perhaps I’m being shortsighted. Can anyone relate their experience and needs for upconverting? I’m looking for any upside here.

I cut a series right now where the Varicam is the main camera and the DVX-100A is the second camera. Though the up-convert is not perfect on the Kona 2, line doubling would be welcome, it does come in handy when I need to insert the 100A shots into the show by up-converting.
It’s mainly useful if you’re cutting an HD show and a client has SD material.
