Hey, I never thought about using such a post to find out what’s really cool at NAB, but I guess it worked. Thanks for all the feedback. I didn’t get to go to the show, but the feedback I had read was nowhere near the buzz from last year with FCP HD, Decklink and AJA duking it out etc.

Yes, FCP’s multicam and more than 2 channel audio are very cool, but they’re more of a “well it’s about time” upgrade rather than a “wow I didn’t expect that!” upgrade.

I’ve already decided to buy the Kona 2, so maybe it’s that there wasn’t any news to shake things up or change my mind.

Anyway, it’s good to hear all your thoughts. I’m a little more jazzed now.

    Hi Tim…

I was very very close to picking up a Aurora PipeStudio. Its I/O’s are the BEST and duplicate the Cinewave setup exactly.

Now that NAB is here, there was no news from the Aurora camp, so that makes me a little nervous. All the buzz is with AJA and Decklink and that’s where I have narrowed my search. The Kona2 is nice because, like the Cinewave, I can work in SD and maintain HD readiness. BUT the I/O options suck! 🙂 While most of my work is slowly moving to SDI, I still do a lot of component and S-Video stuff too. So I would need to buy an iO LA or a bunch of AJA adapters to keep my studio intact. Or upgrade my decks and other hardware. (Now it’s more money than I planned on spending).

The Decklink cards are nice, and I like the Multibridge. And the multi-codec thing is nice since I work with that exclusively now in Cinewave. Decklink wasn’t in my original plan, so I will be doing a lot more reading now about Blackmagic. The chip problems they are having also makes me nervous.

So there you have it. My next step will be to setup demos somewhere so I can see these cards at work.
I’ve seen Decklink and KonaHD in HD suites… both were solid.

Just my opinion, but despite the fact that there was indeed some very notable updates from Apple, AJA, BMD, etc., this year’s NAB just didn’t have the whiz-bang surprises as 2003 NAB when FCP 4 came out, AJA introduced the iO and Avid wowed us with their Mojo-Jo-Joke. That just seemed like a very exciting NAB. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying there wasn’t valuable updates this year, because there definitely was. The 2003 NAB just seemed refreshing of sorts.

One of my favorite things at this year’s NAB… FinalTouch SD and HD. (To DIE for!!!) This was shown at both the Silicon Color booth and the AJA booth with a dedicated station just for it. Simply delicious.

    That and…

Ned Soltz lost a whopping 103 pounds and looks friggin’ AWESOME!
Gary Adcock doesn’t mind when I salp his ass.
Jerry Hofmann still gets jealous when I slap Gary’s ass.
Michael Horton can still whip a crowd into shape.
There’s always one guy that buys 500 LAFCPUG raffle tickets and wins all the prizes and everyone boos at him for doing so… ahhh, the fun never ends!!!

OK, at least someone credible who actually went to the show agrees with me. It’s a relativity thing – last year was a real turning point, this year built on last.

Sorry to miss all the ass-slappin’ fun.

    Damn it Marco
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas

And if you wanted to win anything, you need to NOT be slapping the guy that pulls the tickets.

And then, very fast and hard too. You got me all wrong Marco. I like to watch you beat on Gary.

I go just to see everyone I think, and listen to the buzz. There was some too. JVC’s new HDV camera shows promise, as does the November coming of the Panasonic camera 200 something or other.

One thing that I think sort of got overlooked is a relative price drop from Apple on the upgrade path. Studio for 499 if you are running all three of the latest versions of DVD SP, FCP, and Motion. That really is a price drop if you ask me. Upgrades to all three for the old price of the FCP upgrade.

AJA’s new free software is DA BOMB too I think. Thanks AJA!

That is some very sexy piece of software indeed, thank for Peter Barber for mentioning this one to me.

Amazing to see how big the fcp user group meeting have grown up to,
always very informative, might have to drop the raffle next year to see
if it stays that popular 😉 ….

Yep, though I wasn’t at the show, I was told about this product and am about to install Final Touch HD along with one of the controllers. Freakin awesome to get really realtime color correction for FCP in SD and HD. Will work great with the new broadcast series we’re cutting here.

    Missed seeing you, Walter.

I agree that the next best thing to seeing Marco and Gary mix it up was watching Final Touch HD in action. I have a copy of it and will be writing a review together with a local colorist who will be running the thing and sharing is opinions. But I was totally blown away and, as I remarked in another posting, it’s not quite time to put the DaVinci’s on eBay but this product is a major advance in desktop technology.

Otherwise, I did win a nice little 320gb gRaid at FCP user group; our Dallas FCPUG honcho Major Lytton won the Kona 2 (and he is already a Kona user). And, Marco, make that 104 pounds since I lost another pound from all the walking at show and around Vegas.

Personally, I did not consider NAB dull, possibly because I was so busy that I did not even make it to the North hall (told the wife we didn’t need a new tower this year anyway). The most awesome piece of hardware, though, is that Panny HDX200. For my application of run-and-gun documentary work, the P2 is not the best storage option. So, I hope by the time the camera arrives, Focus or another developer will have shipped a direct-to-disk option for DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO HD. Since Focus has already announced product for the JVC, I suspect that we will see an option that will not require purchase of the P2 cards in order to take advantage of anything beyond DV25.

And, of course, always good to see our gracious hosts Ron and Kathryn.

No! _ We were expecting it in FCP 4! But FINALLY – Final Cut Pro is getting to parity with the Avid crowd and in some cases surpasses the Avid interface for usability.

For Apple Video users, NAB 2005 was BIGGGGGGG! Soundtrack Pro was unexpected and moves up several notches as an audio editing tool within the FCP suite of tools. 24 tracks of audio in Quicktime?? WooHoo! Finally- 5.1 and 7.1 surround!!!

If you saw the demos of HDV on Final Cut Pro 5, it cured me of the sour “it’s only MPEG” comments. Apple has done wonders with the format forced upon the industry by Sony.

And – I WAS surprised how Apple build in MultiCam. Nice key cutting features.

    Really nice job – Apple
