January 8, 2021 at 3:04 pmI am trying to feed component video to my old MX 70 from a late-model DSLR canon camera.
Its a Canon 800d (T7I) and I am tapping the HDMI output of the camera and using a converter to output component.
The picture is breaking up after going through the MX 70. It works fine when plugged strait into my television though.
This could be a setup issue on my part, but I am curious to know if there is some reason HDMI to component is a typical problem for you folks.
any ideas appreciated

January 8, 2021 at 3:21 pmPeter,
I haven’t used the mx70 for a few years once we switched to the ATEM platform. However, a lot of issues that I ran across with component or any signal was that we had to run signals through a scan converter. We used a Sony 1024. This allowed us to recook the digital signal to one the mx70 could see and use. I actually only used component inputs for the DSK to provide a better lower third graphic for our uses. You also have to realize the mx70 is strictly 720x480i at 29.97. Unless your mx70 was the 1080 but do t quote me on that, we never had one.
If you need a very simple basic mixer for your t7 or t7i I’d recommend highly the ATEM mini. It’s 4 hdmi inputs, and has built in up/down crosses. Best part is it’s CHEAP like less than $1k. Rent one from someone like lensrentals.com and give it a try.
Best of luck!

January 8, 2021 at 3:28 pmthanks for your input. funny thing is, I can run s video from an old cam corder, and composite video from a Canon XL-1 with no problems. I will make sure my DSLR is set to the appropriate resolution for starters.

January 8, 2021 at 3:33 pmSure thing. I used to have a t2i and I believe it came with a composite output adapter. Could always try that as well. I don’t remember if the hdmi signal will drop that low. Also in the canon realm of things, look up magic lantern firmware for the camera. Opens up a wide range of options.

January 8, 2021 at 4:22 pmthe t7 will go down to 640 by 480. this setting stabilizes the image, but the image splits the screen into two identical images with a vertical black stripe running up the middle, like I am halfway through a transition (which I am not) My component converter however will only go down to 720 by 480….this could be my problem. glad I only paid 30 bucks for it. will composite go to 720 by 480? I am setting up a basic 3 camera system for my you tube channel, and I find 720 with decent light looks quite good!

January 8, 2021 at 4:45 pmWell 720p is 1280×720 your correct in resolution that was my fault. NTSC is 640×480. Idk why 720 stuck out at me. Yeah. If you send it a composite signal the yellow line of rca from and video outputting device you’d be able to get a clear picture. That’s where the problem lies unfortunately. Getting the right signal to input into it.

January 8, 2021 at 8:01 pmI am expecting Amazon delivery on an HDMI to composite converter in two days. 16 bucks tax in. Reviews are a little mixed as some guys claim theirs didn’t work out of the box. We’ll just have to see. It claims to accept signals ranging from 1920 by 1080 down to NTSC 640 by 480. Hopefully that will sync with my T7!. I got this MX 70 for $125 Canadian (that’s like 85 US) in great shape as a surplus government unit with both the optional boards installed in it. (3d and the SDIs) so I just want to milk it for what it can do in the man cave. Between this thing, my drums, and my project recording setup – its hard to even walk down there. Stay tuned for divorce proceedings.

January 8, 2021 at 8:07 pmWe use a lot of little adapters/converters like that. Also just remember that your SDI connections are SD-SDI not HDSDI

January 8, 2021 at 9:57 pmthat’s a good point….I don’t at this point I expect to be using the sdis much, but the 3 d card looks like it could be fun. My work in tv has been story editing and field producing, so I haven’t touched a switcher in 25 years. Learning to walk again. I’ll you know how my cheapie converter works out

January 19, 2021 at 4:49 pmI told you I would let you know how the little converter (HDMI to composite) box worked out….it does its job fairly well, some degradation in picture quality is to be expected. The you tube image I am producing videos for is perfectly acceptable for what it is…..and a 4;3 aspect ration fits into a cell phone screen more efficiently that 16:9. I am using the s-video outputs on my other 2 cameras, which are a little bit better. I am still trolling around for an old 32 bit windows laptop so I can run MX Navi….its the drivers that are holding me up for that. all in good time. Thanks again for your assistance. Pete. (Toronto)
