yeah…thats whats so weird…on reels comment, I originally captured video from 4 tapes, and used the audio from one tape as the master, synching up the other 4 tapes to that audio track…then with my one sequency with 4 video tracks and 2 audio tracks (L & R of one tape’s audio), I duplicated the sequence 5 times and in 4 copies removed 3 of the tracks…so now i have 5 sequences, consisting of my original 4 tracks synched up with the audio, and each track indiviually synched up with audio in its own sequence. I exported each sequence to a quicktime movie, and created a whole new project, and reimported the 3 video tracks creating a whole new multiclip from them…I get the idea to use the original captured video sequences in my multiclip, but that wont as the camera operators are stupid and started/stopped their cameras, requireing me to bring the video into its own sequence, splice and add black where necessary, to get the video to match the audio…I am so new at FCP that I don’t even know where to begin to troubleshoot a problem liek this so I appreciate everyone’s help and patience with me…im almost at the point of paying for apple support cuz this is way beyond me…

[Ben The Camera Guy] ” I exported each sequence to a quicktime movie”

Did you export as a self contained movie or reference movie? In this instance, self contained would be better…it would slow things down to be referencing all the original clips that made up the sequence.

as a self contained movie…I used to have it on a firewire HDD but because I thought the transfer speed was the initial problem, I put it all on my backup internal SATA drive (that is not my system disk)….still no luck, with both my decklink card turned on and off…

[Ben the Camera Guy] “.I took all 4 clips, synched them to a single sound source, and exported them all as quicktime movies using the default settings and creating stand alone video clips…then I reimported them into fcp and created a multiclip”

Ahhh!! Sorry, Ben, I didn’t even notice this in your original post. My eyes are getting old.

I would definitely go to the originals.

Now you say that the camera shooters “stopped and started” their cameras. This sounds proper to me, that they were doing free-run timecode so that their cameras would sync up later on. Is this what you mean?

If this is what you mean, then go back to the originals, cue up to the beginning of your first clip and wind back about five seconds (if possible). Enter all your info in the Log & Capture (reel number; clip name; angle if possible). Go into your User Preferences and make sure that FCP is set to NOT abort at timecode breaks and that it will create a new clip. When you’re ready, play the clip and hit ‘Capture Now’. Just let FCP handle it from their. It will roll over the spots where the TC changes and create new clips for you. Let it go until you’ve got all the clips from that reel and then do the same for the next one. Don’t forget to enter all your proper logging info first. You might want to do a couply spot checks on TC, too, but I’ve found FCP 100% reliable doing this for me in the past.

    Hope that all makes sense.

if only it were that easy…lets put it this way: all the timecode is different…there’s no master timecode, and there are breaks in the video in such a way that I had to create video tracks and split/nudge the captured video until it visually matched (say on a drummers drum, ect). If I were to just capture and create multiclips from the captured video, everythng would be off…but lets put it this way, i took the exported video angles to another computer, brought them in, and created a multiclip and, not to my surprise, the video freezes on the other computer…so I’m thinking it is something to do with the clips, or my creation of the clips…I captured with the default NTSC-DV settings, and exported with the current settings…any idea for how to make the clips more managable or usable?

Ben, can you copy and paste the item properties for one or more of your clips? It could be there just not matching the sequence settings.

What method did you use to create the multiclip? The ‘create multiclip’ or ‘create multiclip sequence’? I’d try the latter and choose the option to create a sequence. That way, a sequence should be created with settings that match the clips. I’ve never been able to get that method to work (it would create the multiclip, but wouldn’t, for some reason, create the sequence for me) but it works for other people.

Paste your clip settings, though, if you don’t mind.

when i right click on any of my clips in the bin, ae spits an error that says “no items have files that are applicable to this operation”…I also tried to make a multiclip sequence, and it previews in less than real time also…would the fact that I dont have angle numbers assigned to each clip make a difference?

ps i tried adding angle numbers, no difference…do you think I need to reduce the quality of my clips to get them to play in real time? i sure hope not…

    Hey Ben…

No, I don’t think angle numbers will make a difference. That’s just something FCP can look to when it’s putting your multiclip together for you, to help organize the clips.

Do this: select one of the problem source clips in your browser and hit Command-9 to get the properties. See if you can just copy it and paste it into a posting, just so I (or anyone else) can see the parameters. It sounds like something isn’t matching the sequence and FCP is doing extra work converting. Just a guess, but at least we can rule it out.

Something is definitely out of whack, though. Your tower should easily be able to handle a four stream multiclip.

Does anyone else have any idea?

    Creator: Final Cut Pro
    Size: 4.6GB
    Vid Rate: 29.97 FPS
    Frame Size: 720×486
    Compressor: Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2
    Data Rate: 20.2 MB/s
    Pixel Aspect: NTSC-CCIR 601
    Field Dominance:Lower (Even)
    Alpha:None/Ignore
    Composite:Normal
    Audio: 1 Stereo
    Aud. Rate: 48 KHz
    Aud. Format: 16-Bit Integer

Thanks so much again for your assistance so far…hope this helps…
