Multiclip on an iMac 2.4GHz?

Sequence settings are matched and I’m using my external firewire 800 drive now. Video still only plays back for three seconds before going choppy and stopping at around 5 seconds. Sounds like it’s time to try this “offline” approach. What exactly is offline editing?
