I mix Varicam and HVX-200 all the time. They look the same in terms of degree of strobiness. But the image is sharper on the Varicam…far sharper. Maybe that is what you are seeing. To me…it is the same.

How are you viewing this footage? Computer monitor or HD monitor?

I am using computer monitor to view the footage — we only rent the deck out during capture/output, so I will have a chance then to see it smoothly on a monitor (albiet an oan SD monitor).

If I may ask — what settings to you set the HVX200 to get the same smooth look as the Varicam in a 24p timeline? 720p60/ 720p24? 720p24N? We did tests with the first two, and the result was exactly the same (and we did not need to render in our timeline). The last we didn;t check yet.

The motion strobiness is not a difference in the picture quality — it looks like something happened to some of the frames.

I am not talking about differences in picture quality between the cameras — that is a given. The MOTION is noticeably choppier, and I believe this is a settings issue (either with the HVX200 or FCP 5.0). I needed someone to tell me what settings they have everything on — I checked all my resources and still the motion is apparent.

I have seen smooth motion on the HVX200 – so this choppiness in the 24p timeline (next to Varicam clips) is perpelexing.

    any thoughts?

The Varicam shot 720p24…pulldown removed when captured. The HVX-200 set to 720p24 24PN…RAW 23.98, no pulldown to remove.

    Timeline settings, DVCPRO HD 720p24.

Never ever judge the quality of anything using the computer monitors. Only use an external HD monitor to judge the quality. A downconverted signal to an SD monitor might be OK. It looks fine downconverted to mine as well.

No difference. The only way I can tell the footage apart is via the color and how sharp the image is.

Thanks, Shane. We did not shoot 24n with the HVX — perhaps that is the reason for the stuttering motion.

I think what some of us are after is the proper steps, say if shooting in 24p…24pn, can you just ingest to a 24 frame timeline in FCP or do you need to do someting before placing it on the timeline, do you need to use Cinema Tools or the FRC?

After seeing the Dorito’s ads on the super bowl, I’m thinking that I’m doing something wrong when shooting 24p…24pn…or even some of my 30p looks choppy.

    Thanks,
    Tim
