Has anyone else managed to get Motion running with Mac OS X Tiger?
I installed Tiger this morning, and Motion will not even launch.
It bounces once in the dock, and that’s it.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem — do I need to reinstall Panther (ouch).
    Regards, Peter

Hi, thanks so much for your response.
Yeah, I did an archive and install. You’re right, it is flakey.
So, I reinstalled Motion, but now my projects won’t open at all.
Worse still, these projects are embedded in a Final Cut Pro project, and that won’t open up either. Yikes!
Have tried reinstalling Motion and FCP HD, to no avail.
I am going to take some drastic actions tomorrow, and go back to Panther (poo!), and start again.
Let me know if you have the same issues. Are you able to embed Motion files in a FCP file?

    Best regards
    Peter

No, I just use Motion as a particle generator for AE.
I just got a new 2.5 with the 6800 ultra, so hopefully with that and the new upgrade to come Motion will move to a more useful tool.

    did you repair permission?
    good luck

Thanks again for your suggestions… I will try a permissions repair and re-install of FCP and Motion prior to (urgh) reinstalling Panther.

It’s hard to believe that Apple didn’t know about this problem. After all, it’s their own program. Least they could have done is let us know of a work around… oops… I guess that’s really not the least they could have done, is it.

I have gotten everything to work without having to revert to Panther, thank goodness.

    FYI, I did the following:

Archive and Install is NOT flaky. Archive and install gives you a fresh OS install without any third party files from your previous OS version. This is exactly the way we want it to work. Therefore you may need to reinstall some programs (or retreive stuff from the old install). Like many people, I do not approve of dragging things from the old install to the new one, with the exception of fonts that are not in the new OS install.

Back to the issues of Motion and Compressor. First, I swear if I wave an install disc over my computer, Compressor stops working. Whenever I upgrade FCP, Compressor seems to be broke and require a complete reinstall. I’ve accepted that as normal now.

With regard to Motion, it’s because there are a lot of files that are in your old backed up OS (Panther) that are not moved (on purpose) into your new OS install (Tiger). What is new is that reinstalling Motion didn’t fix the problem. Then I realized it’s because the Motion disk is version 1.0 and the files on the HD are version 1.01. I verified this by running software update and it came back with no updates since it already sees version 1.01 as installed, when it isn’t anymore. The solution? I just did a Spotlight search and erased all the Motion files on the HD… reinstalled Motion and it worked. Then I updated to version 1.01.

    Hi Mitch

Thanks for your detailed reply. Yes, I managed to get everything working, as per my previous post.

Except for the fact that I cannot get Motion sequences in the FCP timeline to render properly. Do you work this way? I would be interested to know if you are experiencing any issues here.

    Best Regards
    Peter

Have you tried the round trip from FCP to Motion and back?
It doesn’t keep any of the effects applied in motion when you return to FCP for us.
We did a clean install and had VERY little installed. We are back on 10.3.8

    Dave

Same behavior with similiar configuration. Motion filters and behaviors dumped when back into FCP.
