    You wrapped it up pretty wel there, Oliver. NO NLE is ideal for any editor/artist. There will always be things we love and hate about each and every one of them. Ideally, I’d take massive programming classes, write my own and quite gripin’. lol
    As far as basic editing, my favorite is still Adcom’s NighSuite. Anybody here remeber those? RIP.
    I still like many things about Stratosphere’s DVE and I still love Smoke’s tracker.
    I like DS’s ability to offer trees or timelines and it’s compositing will spoil a bother quickly.
    I love the price point and bang for the buck factor of FCP as well as it’s simple ability to grow with the editor/studio without the need to reinvent the wheel when upgrading.
    I dig Vegas’ audio strengths and still laugh at Avid’s audio weaknesses.
    I like Jaleo’s ability to extrude, bevel and light logos and text without having to go to AE. No, marquee is no answer. Just more egg on the face of Avid.
    Notice I mention nothing in a positive sense about any Aviod product but DS, which again was purchased, not written by them. This really should stand out in their minds. It seems to me they should buy one of each NLE on the market, disect it, learn from it and grow their product(s). This, of course, is assuming they don’t have huge stock in Apple/FCP and at this point, I assume they do. I see no other explaination for letting their once annointed Media Composer take a side seat to FCP. If that was the plan, they should celebrate. If not, somone needs to lose their job because they are really bad at it.
    There wasn’t a bigger Avid fan in the world than me just a few years ago and that was for many years. Now, I simply cannot bring myself to write them another check. I don’t just mean out of principal because they have their customers pay to beta test their struggling products now. I mean literally, I have no money now because I made the mistake of making payments on an Adrenaline. Trying to place the same clients behind this box when they were use to the stability of a real Avid proved to be fatal for my business. Now they literally have to be talked into coming my way “even though I have an Adrenaline” as they put it. I owe two more years at 1250 a month on a box that is worth less than 10k now. Thats pretty tough to swallow.
    I don’t even pay for assurence now because the few times I have called I get the same response “hmm, well that otta work.” I agree. What we paid for really should work. It should have when we purchased it. It should have when you advertised it.
    Avid, if not offering refunds, you at least owe an explaination.

    “I am one of those that sees it as a waiste of time. I have worked on too many NLEs that do not require me to enter and exit a mod to trim. It’s faster to just do it. The goal when writing code for an NLE should be to allow the editor to push as few buttons as possible for each task. For this reason there should be recordable macros for those repeated tasks. I havn’t seen much change in Avid-s interface since ’94 but I have seen other apps grow leaps and bounds. This is why they are no longer the industry standard. I shold not have to lasso to slip. I should not have to go into override mode to slide. I should not have to enter trim mode to trim or select which side I’d like to trim once in that mode. I should just be able to park, hit +10 and an i for in, an o for out, a b for both, ect. Tat said, I’d like to see them fix the bugs before venturing out into features more useful.”

    hate to say though, Avid is still the industry standard. you will start seeing more innovations and simpler “editing” after the integration of Pinnacle/Fast…

    Man, sorry to hear that the system has put you this much in a bind. The local MCA houses here don’t seem to have it that rough. Most of the market has moved to FCP, though. I must say that the FCP/Kona2 systems I run are pretty solid, so I’ve come to the point where I simply don’t miss being on an Avid when I’m on FCP. Things I like about each, I suppose – helped by the fact that most of the FCP systems I work on have usually been set up correctly. Thank Zelin for that!

    What are you smoking? How long do you think it will be before Avid kills that product? So far the Pinnacle acquisition has not been a shining star in Avid’s corporate history. The bottom line is that the future for Avid corporately, is in large enterprise-wide installations, like broadcast news. These folks have the bucks for Unity, Interplay, Isis, etc. Plus they aren’t as picky about the editing toolset. The editors might be, but not the folks that write the checks. This will tell you where Avid’s continuing R&D will be.

    The laugh is that FCP editors claim their system is non modal and Avid is modal.

    Let’s see, I’m in FCP and I want to work on some audio, go out to Sound Track Pro, come back into FCP.

    I want to stabilize a shot, export to Motion, come back into FCP.

    I want to color correct, export to Color, render out, come back in and relink.

    Sounds pretty modal to me.
